Hi guys,

Got a nice belt driven bike from Civia (the Bryant) over the holidays. I plan on using this as my full time commuter to work and wanted a install a front hub motor to get me there a bit easier. In my research, I can't seem to find a throttle that actually works with a drop bar. Does anyone have an idea of examples of how you got this to work. A pic would be nice also ... thanks.

You don't want drop bars on a bike that uses a throttle. Think about it-- if you put the throttle on the tops, you might as well use a straight bar, and if you put the throttle on the drops, you might as well use a roadster bar. If you put the throttle on the hoods position, you might as well use a bullhorn bar. The whole point of a drop bar is to have multiple positions, even if none of them is completely satisfactory in its own right. To make that system work, you'd need multiple throttles in several places.

For a low power system, especially one with gentle ramping on full throttle, it might be plausible to set up a number of momentary button or blister switches at various places on the bar, to get 100% throttle from any of the hand positions. The throttle circuit could be fitted with a dial potentiometer to set a level less than full throttle when one of the buttons is held down.

I asked this question awhile back and came to the following conclusion. Any throttle that's going to work well with drop bars shouldn't be mounted to the bars. Needs to be something that stays with your hand. Maybe a glove or a ring with a pressure switch. I'm sure this is a great idea that would work well, but I don't have the skills to implement it.

Thank you guys for all your suggestions. It looks like the consistent recommendation is not to have a throttle but to go with PAS. So this got me looking around a bit more the drive system ... finally came up with the 8Fun Mid Drive system. Being that i have a IGH, this bike would be the perfect candidate. Now to hunt down a 8Fun BBS02 for a descent price ...

I'll try to keep you guys posted along the build ... which will likely take a long time :D

Okay, so here she is all done with the cables and stuff all cleaned up. No throttle installed, just pedal assist. I must say, I really luv the way she rides now!

Assume you are running with PAS now?
So when pedalling you get all 550/750W?
How does this feel on the road? Im just think it must be ackward when riding slowly. You cant pedal without getting full power but need to pedal to keep it moving.

I have been searching for a power switch so you could throttle the PAS to like 25 and 50%.

I can picture the battery grey..nice bike, now its Really fun to ride.i built a Eboardtracker and used a thumb throttle it was very uncomfortable.
