I thought it could be great to have this feature on the forum that could allow us to search people living close to us..

from now the MEMBER section allow to search by:
-username
-joined date
-posts number
-rank

it would be nice to add Location!

that would help us toi meet other member easier!

ex: i'm in Quebec so i could know wich member are close to me by searching with these city: Quebec, Montreal, Val d'or, Laval, etc

Agree?

Sure. It's called your web-browser. Click on "members", press CTRL+F, and then type in the city or province you're interested in. Whammo, members! Now just surf through all 93 pages and you'll find nearby members in no time.

Ok, I'm now looking at the search feature. I sorted the users by post-count (To filter out the useless 0-post users who clearly joined just to have a web link to their website and to order by the likelihood the user is active.) and then started using the find function on my browser. Interesting results, indeed.

I also noticed that you can sort by location, so if you leave everything blank and sort by location, you can go to the appropriate page that contains the users with the cities/provinces you're looking for.

How can you do that?? I have NO location in the browser (MEMBERS)

like i said i only have:

-username
-joined date
-posts number
-rank

And i did what you suggest with CTRL-F and Quebec or Montreal and found nothing... so it doesn't work :?

or if it does for you, can yo post a pic of the page?.. I wanna see the location you see and that i can't see..

unless it is in the user control panel parameter that it could be desactivated in mine?

It's not really a "search function". It's just a "sort by location" function. Leave everything else blank and choose "sort by location" as shown in the following picture and press "search".

On page 68, I found a few members who listed montreal as their location.

On page 74, I found a few members who listed quebec as their location.

There are a few members who type in nicknames and stuff or do other variations on the location names, so it'd be harder to find them by this method.

I should've elaborated. When I said do CTRL+F, I was talking about "view all members" and then going through each page searching for the location by using the find command. This is accessed in firefox by pressing CTRL and F at the same time, and it's not nearly as buggy as internet explorer's find utility. Really, that's a really inefficient way to search for members, so I wouldn't do it. Sorting is much better, I think.

Ok, I see!.. Thanks ! it work..

i'll take more time to explore next time!

I'd prefer it if all members or most members filled in (were strongly encouraged) the location on their profiles. Even the state or province (or in smaller countries) country would be sufficient. A minimum of uk or california would be a big improvement over nothing.

Interesting.
Fourteen members list their location as Vancouver.
I've met at least five of them and know two other local members who don't list their location.

I looked up Val d'Or on google maps, thinking hey maybe it's not too far from here, since QC is right across the river, yikes it's 415km from here! Looking at the map, as far as I can tell, there isn't much up there other than bass! Are there other ebikes around there?

In Quebec Province, we are Almassi (mtl) Bikeraider(val d'or), some others from Montreal... under ten ebikers around..

But I want to contribute ti grow up this Quebec community! after all we produce clean electricity with some of the largest hydro installations!

I was searching for Spokane and... goose egg.

No wonder why I felt like an alien there.

Hale and Hearty Cascadia!
Portland - 9
Seattle - 11
Vancouver - 14
While searching for Portland, I noticed again that greasypants is posting from Port Moody.
North Vancouver, White Rock, and other satellite communities, that are as old or older than Vancouver, are also represented.
The "Tool for finding member by LOCATION." could be improved if there was a standard applied to entering that user information. Making it a required field for membership wouldn't generate any fewer frivolous or bogus entries though.
Maybe drop-down lists would partially eliminate that. Perhaps there's a way the IP address could be matched to the selection for verafication.

Being able to sort alphabetically and filter by Country, State, Province or Region and City would be a huge improvement.
As it is now you can sort the list back to front or front to back, five pages at a time, guessing where in the list the first letter of the location will appear. There's lots of ebikers in the "World" and "USA".

i think there are a lot more than 9 around here, plus i know of several people who don't hang here but ride tidalforce. i saw on the list, several people in beaverton which is over the hill and i don't think brandon who i met last week has listed his location here.

and i have seen on the streets about 5-6 ebikes of people i don't even know(and everyone will tell you what a hermit i am), on top of the dozen or so i do know of. i even met a woman who had lived in santa barbara and been a speech writer for reagan, and she was selling an original currie she rode down there. she was so outa the profile for this group you would not believe. well maybe a few would relate, what global warming?

but i really would like to see the sphere become the social networking structure for what i call 'Sag Haven', which i view as extended facebook like friends structure which would allow people to share charging spots , and provide sag service in an emergency to others in the extended group, say for long distance riders. but that is still my dreamin. that's why i wanted to start the 'Justin's junctions' listings, as a sag service for people to find available opportunity charging spots.

That wouldn't be a bad idea. I think Endless Sphere could have its own "Charge location" map on a place like Google maps and people could freely add to it or edit it as they wish. I'd imagine an edit history would be had, so people could revert devious changes.

I really wonder how practical that would be, though. I'd imagine it wouldn't be effective until some sort of critical mass is reached(Might have already been reached in a few areas, like Vancouver), but if the popularity is sufficiently high, there'll be "charging stations" where such underground mapping wouldn't be needed kind of like "fill up gas stations".

Oh, there's more than 14 around here too. I was just going by the list of ES members declaring their location.
Vancouver's Kilowatt Hour Ride "MeetUp" group has over 115 members. I'm not one of them so don't show up in the attendance roll.

Left, right, center or extraterrestrial, their politics don't matter. I'll draft 'em, dog 'em or drop 'em as the situation demands.
I'll also offer assistance to any cyclist regardless of their bike or dress.

Perhaps members could indicate in their profiles that they're amicable to meeting semi-strange strangers for a battery charge, camping spot, shower, use of tools etc. If the existence of that information could be linked like the PM icon it would facilitate a lot of what you're suggesting for a social network
