Finally got started on this project. I wanted to see how cheaply I could motorize a bike, and still keep it moderately stealthy and aesthetically pleasing.

Beginning progress:

Only part I had to make so far was the sprocket adapter for the disk brake mount....

....Anyone here doing without a rear brake?

The bike has a mount for rim brakes, but the rim is not rim brake compatible. Plus, those are Schwalbe Big Apple 2.35's, and I doubt I could get rim brakes around those balloons.

With the right caliper (may have to be customized) it would be possible to clamp the sprocket, inside of the chain.

Just don't over-oil the chain . . . .

With a suitable controller, you can use the motor as a brake.

You mean regen?

I have a cheap yi-yun controller for now, since I'm still pretty new at it. I think I'll fry the cheap stuff first. Then move up the the better stuff when I know better.

But, great idea!

Great build.

Will be following close. Sawback is great bike for the $$.

Keep up the good work and love to see more pics as the build goes along.

As far as braking.

Some RC brushless controllers such as the Castle Creations Phoneix line have a break option.

You can choose to use the controller with the brake or without the break.

How strong it will be is unknown. But the option is there. Better than nothing.
