Yet you give one elected bureaucrat with no knowledge of how to manage a business complete control over roads and force everyone to pay for them regardless of their level of use or damage caused to the road. That's a much better system.

Actually since rig drivers are "Commercial" operaters deriving their incomes from the use of our public property (think airwaves becuase that's how the roadway is supposed to be), they should be paying for all of it.


By that definition EVERYONE derives all or portions of their income through use of public property.

Of course it is. That's why government services are generally less efficient than private markets which have competitive pressure. I have yet to see any evidence that private organizations which have no competitive pressure are more efficient than government services. Your suggestion of privatizing the road systems doesn't even pass the laugh test, but given your previously demonstrated imperviousness to logic, I'm not going to waste more time explaining this to you.

Sometimes it makes sense to have what you call a government monopoly. Do you want multiple defense depatrments? How about competing elected government?

Nevermind...

A public utility is ideal when a product is universally needed, and that product is best delivered as a monopoly. That includes roads, defense, water works, electricity, gas, police and protection, and even medicine.

Those entities require public oversite, but there is no systemic reason for them to not work well.

There is ample reason. Government can do no wrong, and when it does wrong the solution is giving it more money. This is the exact opposite of market forces and the major reason Government is an abject failure a the majority of it's undertakings.
 
Without trucks our economy shuts down. The things you want to buy come on trucks. Come bitch about trucks after you've lived that life for a few months and hauled some freight. I have, did it for five years and now I train drivers. Yes there are some idiot truck drivers out there, but that number pales in comparison to the number of idiot four-wheelers and even cyclists. The fine for using an electronic device while operating a commercial vehicle is $3500 to the driver and $11,000 to the company. I have fired drivers that got tickets because they were using their Ipad to listen to music and got caught changing playlists.

I'll take a road full of semis any day of the week. They are, for the most part, driven by trained professionals who's livelihood is in jeopardy if they get a ticket or have an accident. The crackdown needs to happen with all the amateurs out there.
