UltraMotor A2B Metro needs a new battery!

2009 A2B Metro with about 500 charge cycles on the primary battery and 400 cycles on the secondary battery, and around 5000 miles total. The secondary is nominally 36v 11.4 ah.

Any suggestions for replacing the secondary battery with another brand and maybe 48v 15 ah unit?

Would a 48v battery overheat the existing controller, which is built in to the hub motor and is not serviceable (not for me anyways)

I don't have a means to measure battery capacity directly, but the range on the bike is down to 65% of the original capacity... Used to get 20 miles per battery at 2o miles per hour with a lot of fake peddling, for a total of 40 miles. Got me to Key Biscayne tennis center and a very scenic ride along Hobie Beach (near Miami).

I tried 24 hour charges, recharging after a few miles etc but it doesn't seem to change the gradual decline in battery capacity. At 90 lbs for the bike, I dont want to peddle too much.

A new secondary battery (Lithium Maganese, Made in Taiwan by HiTech) is around $700.

For $700 could buy a LiFePo4 48v 15 ah from GoldenMotor.com. Or buy a 36v 10 ah from Ping for $450.

Not going to recite all the relay, battery, motor/controller, swing arm and outright bike replacements during the first 2 years, as those problems don't seem to be relevant (knock on wood!). Let's just say my decision to buy an electric bike with a full 2 year warranty was worth it. I think the new model and backfits resolved most of those early failures.

I might have a primary and secondary A2B batteries available for $250 each plus shipping in a few weeks. I have ordered hobbyking lipos for 11.6ah 72V.

you could also try to find the bad cells that have eaten up the capacity and replace them.

can you access the pack and measure the cell voltages and then discharge the pack into a dummy load to find the weak cells?

pictures?

i don't think you wanna buy the golden motor battery. lotta bad juju on many threads.

your primary battery , it cannot be Li Fe Po chemistry impossible at such low cycle count.
So it is also Mn chemistry?
Or any other chemistry?
Bad cell or two?

The original factory A pack is LiMn 18650 cells, at that age and cycle count, the pack is due for retirement.. i would not waste my time patching a leaking bucket.

Mine is still going, if i still have it by end of the season i'm going to tear it apart and remove the internal controller, A pack and tires.. ( god i hate the stock A2B tires.. they look good but they suck.. kinda like my ex. )

I'm reluctant to put lipo inside the frame, if/when they swell, they coulb become wedged in there and damage the frame ( or make a royal mess when you try to remove them.. )

You " can " run higher voltage into the original controller, it will increase speed, to the point of not being able to keep up with the pedals when fake Pedaling. ( not peddle.. pedal.. come on guys.. ) .. i'm currently running 2 extra cells in series with the A pack..

Thanks for all your comments...

I can't really complain about eh A2B Battery life.. They told me 500 cycles was the 50% limit when i bought it... So if i get another 100 cycles or so i'd be satisfied.

Edimame, If you have a primary pack ready in a few months I would be interested in hearing about it.

For those looking to replace those Kenda puncture me now tires.... People have gone to Shinko SR714 DOT approved tire, which is sized a little differently since it is for a motorcycle, at 2.25-16. It is a great, long lasting, puncture resistant tire. I bought a few Kenda's a couple of years ago now i'm stuck with them..

Edamame, I would also be interested in an A2B secondary battery pack. I have a dead one, so if it is just the battery pack without case,I can do the swap.

I am shopping for a secondary rear battery for my 2011 A2B Metro Gen. 2. An online dealer has one in stock that he claims he got "a few months ago" whereas another dealer says he has them drop shipped directly from Hero Eco.

My question is: Are A2B Metro rear batteries exactly like the main downtube battery in that they need to be kept topped off and charged every so often? Does the rear battery's BMS run it down just like the main battery if not charged every so often? My fear is in getting a battery that is bad due to sitting in a dealer's store too long. Any insights appreciated!

Hi all,

Thread dig! I'm looking for new in-frame battery ideas for an old a2b metro. I don't think Paul/cell man or myself would want bother trying to design/make a custom multi section battery that could fit in that curved battery case.

Anyone have any idea what cells are inside the newer hero Eco replacement batteries?

what cells are in the ultramoto a2b in frame battery? and what are in the back? it says lion on the bike, does that mean 18650? or pouch lipos? ( like rc cars use)

there is a bike for sale cheap but i figure it;s cause the batts are dead practically. the replacement is 700 just for the inframe one. if they use 18650 cells i would consider trying to rebuild the in frame battery as well as the backup. anybody know what;s inside? they never tell you on any sales site.
