University of Cincinnati (Ohio) Electric Assist Bike Design Project:
The University Of Cincinnati School Of Design is hosting an interdisciplinary program in Electric Assisted Bike design this summer. The class will run from June through August. The program is initiated by the Department of Industrial Design with open invitations to departments of Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. The University of Cincinnati Industrial Design department is consistently ranked one of the top programs in the USA. Focus for the program will be to develop new technology and innovative designs for this rapidly developing category in the USA.

This program will be supported by a significant group of corporate sponsors:

Pat Cunnane – President of Advanced Sports / Fuji Bicycles and Advanced Sports owner - Ideal Bike Corporation (one of the largest bike and e bike builders’ worldwide) has volunteered, his staff for instructional, and prototyping support. Student designs will be showcased in the Advanced Sports booth at Interbike 2010 in Las Vegas 9.22-24

Rob Cappucci, Category Manager, Electric Bike Products of SRAM – the world’s largest bike / e bike components supplier has pledged instructional assistance, component parts, and prototyping assistance.

The LEVA (Light Electrical Vehicle Association of America) and President Ed Benjamin of Benjamin Consulting will offer world market information, connection to component and bike suppliers worldwide, and the ability to link student designs with potential manufacturers. Ed’s experience includes high profile consulting to the ebike industry worldwide.

Frank E. Jamerson PHD, author of EBWR (Electric Bike World Report) and former key researcher for General Motors Physics Lab resulting in significant advances in fuel cell, lithium battery development, and electric hub motors for LEV’s, has offered support and assistance via supplier connections and published information.

Phylion Corporation of Suzhou, China (a Lenovo subsidiary) is offering Lithium battery samples and possible prototyping of battery configurations.

Project leader for this program at the University is Professor Steven J. Doehler MS with a significant background in User Centered Design for the health and wellness fields. His professional background includes entrepreneurial activities, corporate, and high profile Industrial Design consulting positions. Steve also has bike shop mechanical experience from his youth that applies directly to this project.

Design, technology, and market information support will be provided by UC Industrial Design alumnus - William H. Ropp, Principal of Strategic Product Planning LLC, with 26+ years of Research, Planning, Marketing, Brand Launch, and over 20 patents in bike / electric bikes for world markets. Bill will advise the class on a weekly basis.
