using automotive relays to switch higher voltages?

Hey

just wondering if anyone knows if it is ok to use a 12v automotive relay to switch say 50v dc.??

i will use the step down transformer to power the relay at 12v.

You have the problem as iv'e always burnt out plugs connecting up as with cyclone the switch does not totally turn off , with the 36v one i have I use one of those ontop of battery screw down things but i'm interested in how this works as i'd do the same , the stepdown transformer would be more weight
