2005 ford ranger, lightweight, simple, usefull, and parts are cheap. Transwarp and thundersag in the bed and engine compartment. Decent range and power on a usefull platform for 10 grand with some DIY.

For me the perfect conversion car would be a 79-82 RX-7
They have a relatively large engine bay (large enough to stick a Chevy 350 V8 in) and behind the seats are 2 storage compartments that are large enough to hold all the LiPo you would ever need. And by putting the Bats there you keep the awesome 50/50 weight distribution that these cars are famous for. Also they are pretty lite weight and already come without power steering.
