Seriously, what's the best motor/controller to build on these days? I'm out of date by 7 years.
Last time I did this I was playing with Cromotors.

I have a tesla battery pack that I need to repurpose (and remove some cells that got rusty.
I can reconfigure it in whatever manner.

I'd like to build something that I can drag on the back of my camper - I pulled a honda dirt bike around last year. The camper has a 1.2Kw solar system and is getting a 14kwh battery pack this fall. I don't mind if this bike weights in a bit, but I would like to get offroad with it since I live near some killer offroad bike/forest service trails.

My budget is... whatever I deem. I'm in a good place these days.

So, suggestions?

At this minute if building would try to get a Nucular controller 12F and hook it up to a QS273 4000W 50H E Bike Spoke Hub Motor V3 Type 152mm in a KMX trike but that is just me.

Interesting way to go. I'm thinking I'd avoid the trike build - I'd like height to see things and I have singletrack... (I live at 9k feet in Colorado.)

Hmm, thinking about it, I may seriously consider building this into my XR600R. I really don't have much $ in that bike and I already have it licensed for the road.... Hmmmmm.

I'm stuck with recumbent can not sit up on a seat for too long. I was thinking bike build but you will want some type of mid drive not sure what the hottest is on that at the moment.

 not enought?
Nucular controller's have a 24F. don't know if you are up on any of this. Things I dream of. I don't need the speed myself had a tumble a few months ago and broke some ribs. Have not got back into riding again, must do it soon.

Broken ribs hurt, I had bruised ribs a decade ago and it hurt. It takes a bit to get the confidence back.
Speaking of seats, I must've broken a dozen by now. The latest seat is the last seat I have, Walmart seat with collapsing rails. Bought some metal to beef up an old steel base seat.

As far as the best motor, it depends. Can you lift 50 lbs to place bike on a rack. As a daily cruiser, I just want dependability now with enough power to get me up the worst hill near me but not on my daily ride. So the hills on my daily ride I can gain speed comfortably.

Saw a group of 4 with folding fat ebikes, might be worth something for the OP to look into. They had rear small hubs, probably 8fun bafang weak motors not worth the time to look at. MXUS/QS 3kw or Leaf 1500W for hub motors, MAC for geared motor, Astro for RC motor, BBSHD for mid drive or if you want more power Cyclone-TW 3kw or coaxial 4kw.

Things had not changed much in the last 7 years. More people are building BB drives, following the market. They ride good but slow, the kind to suit the bicycle purists using PAS.
Most fast ebikes are still using the same as you had: your Cromotor is a QS205h50 mod to shave some weight off. We use the heavier QS205h50v3 now, because it does shed heat better, it is available in a complete variety of windings, and cheaper. Some better ebike specific frames had come available, well above the cheap Chinese box frames. The lightest and best mountain performance is still achieved building on the best DH frames.

Big mid drives are now easier to build. More parts available, better motor choice. Still more work and expansive, but likely the best that you could do if you build on your Trail motorcycle.

The best controller nowadays is the nucular 24, but long to wait to get one and pretty expansive. I still use the cheap Chinese controllers that are simple and easy to mod. Feeding 25kw acceleration bursts to the QS motor. No fancy programming options, only simple brutal acceleration, and cheap enough to keep a spare on the shelves.
