Why can't we build this motor?

I think the main barrier with the Yasa motor is the price. IIRC it was circa £5k when a friend made enquiries a year ago.

I don't understand why the EV community expects to be able to buy the latest technology for peanuts.

If this was an ICE forum, would we be complaining about a McLaren engine costing $5k??

Oh yeah. People complain about not being able to afford everything. They want the house in Beverly Hills but they don't want to pay what it costs in South Central.

Absolutely not. It's a serious motor for serious EV projects :)

We don't want it for cheap! We want to build it for cheap :p

You do not want to compare complicity of McLaren ICE and Yasa electric motor. I suppose, mentioned ICE probably costs what they charge for. Yasas price tag is probably made of patents, IP and other BS.
Other way to see it, McLaren has earned its right to charge what ever they want over decades. What is Yasa?

Complicity means being involved in something illegal. Perhaps you meant complexity?

Have you tried to buy an engine for your MP4-12C? I doubt you could buy one for $50k, let alone $5k. Yes an electric motor is and should be cheaper to make than an ICE, but that doesn't mean new technology motors are or will ever be worth peanuts.

If you look at the guys building and modifying ICE cars and motorbikes, none of them are trying to buy brand new McLaren/Ferrari/MV Agusta engines. They are rebuilding and modifying older second hand engines, or possibly buying new but low tech "crate" engines like Chev LSX or factory Harley engines. The EV equivalent of those would be a Netgain or similar industrial motor.
