Hi,

Keep it in good working order and appearance for a year, and even then people will still go back to the escalator for the most part, because it ceases to be amusing over time.

Then you have to come up with something else.

I have to say however that it was a fascinating experiment.

Do escalators use a lot of power then?

Nope. An escalator perpetually loaded with 20 people at 200lbs each, lifting them at 1ft/sec vertical, with 30% friction losses will still only require a 10hp motor. When not loaded, they have field weakening on the VFDs (or constant speed regulated DC motors) so that they only draw just enough power to overcome the internal friction of the system.

Very cool stairs though! That would be fun to play on piano stairs. :)

I find it funny that VW is claiming to be interested in the promotion of fun, when every product they make is so terribly uninspiring boring and terrible to drive. Even the VW R32 is like a cure for insomnia on wheels combined with a sensory deprivation tank. I do admit the early 80's rabbits were pretty decently fun car, despite the complete anemia.
