Hi guys,

I've just sold my petrol Go-ped scooter for a decent amount and I'd like to build an e mountain bike.
I've been lucky enough to own a 2013 Santa Cruz Bronson, and have been inspired by Tom Staton's RC ebike, however although I'm an undergrad engineer, I only have access to a workshop in the Holidays and need something that wont require home machined parts.

I'm looking at a motor price range around 400 quid with room for upgrade later, and after some research the only two mid drive motors I could find within that region was the:

https://www.gngebike.com/gng-2019-3000w
From Hong Kong. (444 quid with delivery, 3000w GNG)
and the:
https://eclipsebikes.com/product_info.php?products_id=12
From the UK (404 quid, 750W, BBS02)

Has anyone had experience with the GNG motor, the Bafang is widely more used which is making me lean toward it however the GNG is on paper 4x more powerful and cheaper.

The BBSHD was unfortunately 560quid on the UK website, which is out of my budget.
I'm open to any sort of advice, I've always been a petrol head and only have experience with RC power trains so this is quite new to me.

Cheers!!

Hopefully the info in those will help you decide if it will fit on your bike, and if it will fit your needs. ;)

If not, they will at least give you some specific questions to ask here in this thread that we can then help you with.

Look around for a better priced BBSHD, hopefully with shipping will be cheaper then whatever source you got within the UK, but then there is VAT so you maybe pooched anyway.

The Cyclone is good, but again there is the Value Added Tax to deal with importing that into the UK. That damn VAT tax, what a bummer.

Why don't you want hub motor? You got steep and hilly terrain? A big mxus 3kw with ferrorfluid will help out a lot.

Use https://www.ebikes.ca/tools/trip-simulator.html to map your route
and put in the mxus motor 45H, with a 50A

Cheers for the replies really helps!

I haven't fully considered hub motors, but are they hard to find in 27.5 sizing. I'm going to be using the bike mostly as a commuter but would like power to mess around on the trails on a day off. I've heard hub motors aren't too good for this, due to the unsprung weight and lack of torque compared to their mid drive counterparts.

Although it seem's their cheaper so I'll have to have a look.

I live in relatively flat terrain however so maybe a hub will do.

Also with the BBS02, will I be quite limited in power - Would I be able to upgrade the controller or will the motor hold me back? Do you reckon it would be better to just save up more and get the HD instead?

Cheers

Rhys
