The rules of Endless Sphere

Hello, A very reasonable and well thought out set of rules. Probably why I have enjoyed lurking on this site so much that I finally signed up. I'm a noob when it comes to e-bikes and these forums have taught me so very much already. I've have spent Endless hours lurking here and have nearly filled a yellow legal pad with notes. Looking forward to contributing when I can (Going to the Battery section next to post the awesome deal I've found on 18650's) and learning more from the diverse members.

Look, we were all noobs at one point that is all fine and dandy. Spending endless hours on Endless Sphere, I got that t-shirt. Well if you only filled a yellow legal pad with notes, meaning more then one page and meaning more like 50 or 100 pages, yeah me too
I am looking forward to the new layout, soon we can hope, no rush. Keep the ones doing the behind the scenes work, fresh and alert.
Diverse members indeed, be cool to have a Linus Tech Tips -like, get together. Linus Tech Tips is electronics forum, seems popular with the kids, they've been having get togethers for the past many years, social media buzz type youtube blogger guy. 6 month fad for me, researching a new build. Ryzen 2600 but ended up with Ryzen 3600, 2x8=16gb, 1tb ssd.

Years back a bunch of us used to show up at the bicycle races in SoCal and New Mexico. They were a lot of fun.

My main computer is also running a Ryson processor. IMHO they had the best bang for the buck 18 months ago.

Glad you enjoy the place, and welcome!

Yes I am only here because I love to read and learn about this stuff as RC hobbies have been a hobby of mine from my teens to 20s than other things to cold now in my mid 40s all those hobbies I've come back and I love learning about brushless motors and BMSs and three face voters with sensor attached. Along with how to wire and change a scooter you might have.

Neither, it just rhymes. Good luck to you.
Well thanks. But to be honest my previous comment was just a play on words, calling myself a vending machine and all. I dont have any plans to be a dispensary of either electronics or mobility devices of any sort, though the thought crosses my mind on a regular basis.

Now that we've got that out of the way I will share something I've noticed. A bit of a pet peeve if you will.

Do you shop much for led strips? Ever bought purple led strips and ended up with those awful pink-purple ones? I know its mostly my own OCD talking, but a simple search for 'purple led strips' gives you one of 3 things. UV strips which are typically labeled as such with the proper primary light output in nanometers, actual purple led strips which are fairly rare and in reality are simply blue leds with the slightest tinge of transparent red on the lenses of each individual LED, and those gawd awful (IMHO) magenta or lilac or whatever pink-purple leds which are in fact a bit brighter than true purple or UV but are horrible as they do a terrible job of living up to the word purple.

Its all marketing wank and deceptive practices. For the most part you dont truly know what you're getting until the package arrives.

I know, first world problems and all, but its one of those things that just irks me. If you're still reading my OCD rant, congratulations and I hope I've piqued your interest. There are just a few known vendors of actual purple LED strips and HobbyPartz.com is one of them. I know they dont have the best reputation and what they sell isnt exactly top shelf or even hobby quality Rc vehicles. But they do stock actual purple LED strips and for that I commend them.

If you have experience in this matter you'll know what I'm talking about. Look very closely at the pics of the product being sold. If its what I call true purple it will show up as a clear lens with just the faintest red tint on the LED lenses. Everything else is that horrible pink-purple and even Digikey.com stocks this awfulness.

If I ever win the lottery I will make it a personal vendetta to sue the likes of feebay, scamazon and even Digikey/Mouser/Jameco and any other vendor that doesnt know how to properly label their purple-ish led strips/products. Not for any significant amount, mind you, I would just sue them on principle to force some actual clear standards. Like pay me $5 and admit your mistake.

/rant off.

Can some explain/remove gravatar? I didnt ask for this, and how have they scrapes a random selfie I took in college that I deleted over 10 years ago.

One of the rules is no private information is to me shared, yet here you are automatically assigning profile pictures from a third party data scraping company?

I'm trying to change my profile pic to blank and I can't. And now ever on this forum knows what I look like while sitting at my computer in college over 10 years ago.

Come on man. What the frock are you allowing?

Here's the deal.

If you set up a gravatar and associated it with an email address at any point in time, the default setting in our forum software ( Xenforo ) is to see if you have a gravatar set for the email address you entered and use that by default.

From the Xenforo backend, here is how it's explained:

I can see how this seems incongruent for privacy concerns, however, Gravatar isn't a scraping company.

Looks like you successfully changed it!

On the basis of making our software more predictable so nobody gets spooked, as well as not relying on a third party for pictures ( this has turned out bad in the long run - see scads of broken content from imgur/tinypic/etc deciding they don't want to provide free service anymore ), i've turned the above setting off.

I was upset, now I'm not. Thank You either way, and sorry I came off so aggressive.

Rule wording and arrangement slightly updated.

Added a rule against malicious use of multiple accounts, removed a politics rule from the main listing ( covered by the rules in off topic )

Some rules changes:

- removed illegal/pornography rule and replaced it with a general rated R rule.
- defined the line of behavior better in numerous areas.
- clarified advice for vendors.

Our #1 goal at Endless Sphere is to provide a low resistance environment for discussing DIY electric vehicles and other loosely related topics. This means that not only do we need rules, but to have fairness in the enforcement of them. Both sides will be detailed here.

🔋⚡ How to receive the maximum charge from Endless Sphere

1. Search before posting!
We have both a google search function ( pretty good! ) and a Xenforo search function that's more specific. Please use them before posting to see if your question has already been asked; helping keep duplicate topics to a minimum.

2. When you can't help but zap some stupidity, be kind as possible in calling it out and explaining why.
We want this forum to be a great place to learn and share quality information. Newbies usually come with misconceptions. Do your best to rectify the misunderstanding without insults, as when a person becomes defensive, the learning/listening typically shuts down :lowbatt: . Focus on the facts and not the personalities, and someone might actually learn something 🔋

3. If someone grinds your gears, please ignore them.
Some personalities just don't mix! The best course of action if you find someone intolerable is to ignore them. Our forum software has the ability to block a member in order to lower the friction they create!

4. Use the report button if you see a troublesome post.
This forum is so big that no single moderator can see all of it. If a post violates our rules, let us know.

5. Useful information should be posted in public!
A question/answer type thread is best discussed in public so that other members can learn from it. Avoid using PMs for this purpose.

6. Stay on topic!
When you reply to someone's post, consider yourself a guest in their house. The original poster wants an answer or discussion on the topic they brought up; others do too. Please do your best to respect that.

👨‍⚖️ Basic rules

1. Keep it R rated or below
The mass majority of us are adults and can handle some salty language. We draw the line when the content is substantially illegal, or exceeds the curse words per second of a gangsta rap video.

2. Do not repeatedly harass or insult a member across the forum.
If you are asked by the member or moderator to stop, you're required to stop. Some people have thicker skins than others, so what constitutes harassment is up to the moderator team's judgement.

3. Commercial activity happens in our online marketplace.
If you wish to sell or market a product, you need to clearly identify yourself as a vendor and post in the online marketplace. Guerilla marketing is not tolerated here and honesty is the best policy.

4. Do not make false claims against a vendor.
False claims can unnecessarily hurt an honest business, and we don't want to see that.
On the other hand, a legitimately crooked vendor should be exposed; so have a good case before posting it.

5. Ad hominem attacks on members' unchangeable traits such as race, sex, nationality, etc are bad news.
We do not want a member to feel unwelcome on the basis of any aspect of their identity, whether they are a minority or majority. In severe cases of this, we will intervene.

6. Do not repeatedly flood, derail, or interfere with threads.
Having discussions that are worth reading is important. Those who have a long history of this will be asked to stop and banned if they don't.

7. If you want to talk about something controversial, post it in the off topic section.
The off topic section was designed for members who have thicker skins and/or more open minds than average. A thread which is too controversial for the other parts of the forum may be moved there.

8. One account per person.
Please don't waste our resources or time. We will merge duplicate accounts without notice.
If you are doing this maliciously or to waste people's time, you will get banned super hard.
Exception: business account for a vendor vs a personal account is okay (y)

9. Do not run AI bot accounts on this website, and always note when AI was used during a conversation.
People who use this forum come here to communicate with other humans, not AI. We won't allow the integrity of the forum to be undermined by undisclosed use of AI. If you do not make it clear that the post is generated by AI in the post, we will likely remove it. If your account is ran by an AI bot, it will be banned.

☢️🚨 Nuclear no-nos; behavior that we take seriously

1. Do not Expose a member's private information without consent.

This means posting PMs, emails, addresses, full names, phone numbers, or any other information a member does not consent to be posted.

2. Do not spam the forum or use bots.
You will be instantly banned; and if you repeatedly do it, your internet service provider will hear about it.

3. Do not make threats of harm against anyone on the forum.
If you have problem with a member, a vendor, etc, please bring it to a moderator instead, or resolve the conflict yourself before you cross this line.

4. Do not intentionally create an unnecessary burden for the moderator team.
This means doing things like lying about another member's behavior to try to get them banned, lying about the actions of a moderator, interfering with moderation, flooding the moderation report queue, etc.

Our moderators are volunteers who give personal time and passion into keeping this place safe and useful. If you intentionally and repeatedly make their job difficult, this can result in a ban for wasting the precious time that volunteers give us.

:es:👨‍⚖️ Moderator's duty to our members

1. We will delete posts only when necessary ( they are harmful, extremely off topic, illegal, etc. ).

We prefer to retain useful information or history whenever possible, and prefer to not censor.
Threads that are too stinky to retain are moved to 'the dumpster' so they can be read for a limited time to provide some transparency in the moderation process and provide examples of what NOT to post.

2. We will not moderate content based on our own biases, political affiliations, commercial affiliations, etc.
Our moderator team is intentionally hand-picked for a diverse set of views and backgrounds, and moderators are required to discuss internally issues with a post or member when the choice is unclear or bias could be a factor.

3. We will set expectations and give warnings when a member is engaging in repeated bad behavior.
Some people act out because they're having a bad day. We prefer to work with people before using the ban hammer. But we do have a limit. 😉

4. We will be responsive to members who are being harmed or threatened by another member.
If someone has posted private details you don't consent to being shown, the offending user will be punished and the information removed from public view. It's critical to us that this forum is a safe to use.

5. If you have a complaint about our moderation, we want to hear why.
If you believe you are being treated unfairly by a moderator, we will hear your complaint. Please send a member of the moderator team a private message, instead of venting it on the forum. Be civil with us and we will be civil with you.

6. Moderators must follow the rules of the forum, and are also subject to protections the rules provide.
We do not believe in having separate standards of behavior. Moderators are expected to follow forum rules, and not abuse their position of power. Moderators also deserve the same protections that members are granted.

👨‍💼👩‍💼 Some advice for vendors

We may be a DIY forum but we welcome any vendor willing to provide products and support for products that are relevant to our interests.
When you join the forum, please clearly identify yourself and keep posts of a commercial nature to the online marketplace section. We don't tolerate guerilla marketing.
Please alert a moderator if you are being harassed unnecessarily. We don't want to see that happen.
Also be aware that your account can be removed if you rip off or deceive our members if we conclude, after hearing both sides of the case, that you have repeatedly been in the wrong.🚨

I can imagine "you" (the moderators) won't do this, but I want to propose a forum rule.

We call out clearly illegal or anti-social behaviour, including breaking local laws for ebikes or e-motorcycles when we do know the location.

Part of riding an ebike is having a society that does not improperly oppose riding an ebike, including not antagonizing other road users. Helping people break the local laws is against all ebike riderrs.

"We don't know where this is" - then don't. When we do, then we do.
"We don't know the laws" - then don't. But when we do, then we do.

We can act in favour of ebikes, and that's not just "how to make your bike into what you want". It's also how to have a society where ebikes are welcome, and dodging responsibility is the problem - both for people that are obviously acting illegally or anti-socially and also for all the rest of us - who would like a welcoming experience on the road.

I don't agree we should dodge this. People who don't like that can leave, and good riddance. The social side is more important than the technical side.

I don't agree that I should pay the price for other people who refuse to take responsibility for their actions. Don't impose that on my by letting them continue in blithe ignorance of their actions. I have to face vehicles on the road.

Is there a word/slang for someone who loves to create a bunch of rules to control people?

Is there a word/slang for someone who loves to create a bunch of rules to control people?

The new restrictions added in January here virtually make 90% of e-bikes illegal, yet Costco still sells these things for $350, and all the e-bike shops keep selling their illegal bikes too. But if you can shell out $6k for a specialized, you can be completely legal. I see a lot of old folks bringing home their groceries on these little bikes, but I don’t have the heart to turn them in.

Long answer:

I've got this request for years, and it always comes from someone who lives in a very legally restrictive area.

We made a mistake ages ago and didn't require people to fill our their location on this website. This became a problem when our demographics shifted. This only got rectified 2 years ago. The best data i have on where ES comes from google analytics. So here's some insights on the range of who visits us ( from the last 28 days of data ):

top part:

Middle portion:

As you can see, there's a large spread of visitors, but very heavy on Americans. There's an equally wide range of what is the law and how is the law actually applied. Globally, this ranges from 'the police have dynos' to 'can't recognize what an ebike is'. This varies from country to country but also, in rural/suburban areas of anywhere, there tends to be no enforcement of not so legal vehicles. So if you chose to be an ebike behavior nanny, you have a lot of missing context.

Given this, the appropriate level of moralizing from the moderators about how you operate or design your vehicle, is the lowest common denominator, which is close to none.

Besides, we are a technical website for bikers, nerds, tinkerers, hot rodders, weirdos, and technical geniuses first, above all other considerations.

What's most important for this website is that it's both useful and interesting. You can't have both without allowing for a little danger.

toddlerlipo.jpg

The last point; we are lucky that the website is based in the USA. USA lets us get away with a lot, and it is important to me that i continue to extend that gift to the rest of the world as long as we are legally able to.

Sorry to hear you don't like that aspect of the gift.

We as moderators cannot police the world's vehicle operating behavior from the keyboard. It's both futile and unnecessary to attempt that on a global website. ES is an underground corner of the web and the dummies that engage in that behavior generally don't hang out on internet forums in the first place, so we have basically no reach to people who create actual problems.

I also strongly object to this kind of moderation and would have zero interest in even hanging out in a place that was moderated like that. So on a personal level, i'm the last person you want to pitch this to.

Strongly agree with all of that

offGridDownUnder I get where you are coming from. Over the years of being on here have seen ebikers being called out for bad behavior while riding. Don't see the harm in calling them out, but it is better to engage with them and guide them in the right direction than any type of punishment. My trike is illegal but i'm well behaved with it.

Big rules update to the first post.

I have hopefully made rules for vendors super duper clear. They are even moved to the top Before, they weren't.
Most vendors don't follow our rules or are aware of what best practice is. Hopefully this improves.

Only minor language changes in the rules for members.
