CYC Photon Gen 2?

So, following their usual "generations" $ extraction strategy CYC is preparing to drop the Gen 2 Photon. Like with the iterations of their other drives it is hard to know exactly what has changed or if upgrading might be worth it or not. If anyone has any hard non-advertising tech info, please let us know.

 
I hate that this is just a teaser.
But it's good that we're finally getting a new ebike part this year in such a down market.

Fingers crossed that the efficiency/power has improved; that would get me interested in it.
 
IMO power and efficiency are already good with gen 1. Riding with torqe sense pedaling I am already limited by bike gearing. Plenty of power, plenty of range. But hopefully cooling is improved for higher power and longer run time on throttle. But that will always be challenging with these compact motors. Maybe q-factor improvement... although I am not sure that will be possible.

I'm interested if it can do 1000w continuous and doesn't have worse Q factor.
I'm told that the Q factor is a tad lower on the Photon gen1 versus a BBSHD/BBS02.. correct me if i'm wrong

CYC did an amazing job with the first Photon and incrementally upgraded it during production. Works extremely well for me for the past 2+ years. Nothing else I've seen or ridden (including OTS bikes) comes close.

My thoughts on the Gen2:

Q factor would benefit from being reduced - not for me personally, I can't see me ever fitting to anything other than a Boost frame, but lower Q would allow for more choice for cranks.

I think there is speculation that they've moved to an inrunner config. That don't impress me much, the outrunner works perfectly for me, I don't try to ride my bikes like motorcycles and I never have heat issues with the motor. I'd also prefer the motor got smaller, not larger and I'll bet the Gen2 is going to be larger.

Internal gear ratio should be increased - one of the inefficiencies of the Photon is the relatively low internal gearing, which means to you have to maintain a very high cadence to get somewhere decent on the efficiency curve.

Better access for service would be helpful - a proper O-ring system for the end cover would be easier than using a heat gun and sealant.

A service kit would be REALLY useful. Try getting the recommended lubricants for the Photon in anything less than industrial quantities, down here in NZ it is extremely difficult. In particular, lubricant for Spragg clutches.

I'd like for the motor to have more BB clearance so fitting to carbon frames is feasible (even if eccentric adapters are still required). Would also help with frammes with under BB cable routing.

The chainring retention system on the original Photon sucks. Not sure if I can ever get mine off at this stage. I think the physical design is probably OK, but they got caught out by metallurgical issues. I guess CYC will maintain compatibility going forward.

Whatever CYC do, I'm pretty confident the Gen 2 will be at least as good as the original, and they had to announce something since the original Photon is no longer available (with no explanation) which was a bit concerning until this tease.

Yeah, I had thought that maybe there had been a pre-tariff relocation of existing stock to US warehouses. But that would probably have recovered by now and CYC would be crazy to compromise their other markets just because one is crazy. Neither do I think the rest of the world should subsidise tariffs in any market (which is what happens if CYC try to avoid raising prices in tariffed markets).

Or a worse case scenario where CYC was unable to continue in the current volatile market situation - they wouldn't be alone. I think they might have enough scale and market diversity to be OK. Their products are certainly good enough but how many manufacturers are surviving in this segment?

Website shows Photon (now with the "Gen 1" label) but clicking through to the sales page is listed as discounted but sold out. Local stock in NZ is discounted and may still be available.

I'd guess they are a little behind schedule, transitioning products must be a bit tricky. Possibly we'll see the same backlogs for orders with Gen 2 as we did for the original, though CYC recovered fairly quickly from that. It for sure will be a great product :)

In some ways I would have preferred CYC stick with the Photon as it is, and additionally develop the rumoured Proton - even though I would unlikely be a customer for that. At this stage I think they're rationalising their product range and I suspect the Proton is delayed or dead.

As the ebike market matures, there are going to be regulatory changes that might make selling all these products more difficult, I wonder how CYC will navigate these.

I also have a TSDZ2 and honestly it rides very similarly and compares favorably in operation to the Photon, especially on OSF... at least pedaling. The TSDs don't have the high unrestricted/race throttle power of the Photon, but with Gen 1 Photon that is mostly just a novelty since heat management is so limiting.

Now, the Photon is made from much better hardware and has a nice Bluetooth app right out of the box. But it is at least 2x the cost of the TSDZxs. Some of us are willing to pay the premium, but many aren't. I would welcome the better heat management of the Gen 2 so it could run higher continuous power, whether on pedal or throttle, even if it is slightly larger. That would make the bike more versatile.

Canbus eh? That's unfortunate. I wonder if the new controllers will still be vesc based and thus required to be open source. Not that they ever gave me the real source for the gen 1. Only the GitHub page with missing params from what I was seeing over the display bus.

For some, there isn't that choice. For decent modern 1x and Boost MTB configurations, Photon (or the other CYC products) are the only choice. This is mainly due to the BB chassis configuration - the minimum chainring sizes and chainline are not going to work.

Bafang did this move before they started ignoring their hobbyist customers and started working with the bigger bike assemblers. It may be driven by the market demands of that segment, but maybe also a step towards countering the coming ebike regulations and subsequent field enforcement that seems to be happening world wide.

How does Canbus benefit the user?
 
IDK, that isn't a big deal to me. As long as the app has similar functionality to the current offering and allows me to customize the modes, settings and select unrestricted I don't care how the motor controller and display communicate with each other. We never got OSF for CYC before anyway. Oh, but they had better not make it necessary to use proprietary batteries. That would be a deal breaker.

The current Photon goes up to 2k peak in unrestricted, but that's probably only good for a minute or so. Hopefully the new thermal design will increase the time you can run peak power before it throttles.

1500w peak, 750w continuous sounds allright.

Im curious as to what conditions you say it rides very similarly?

I play around with all the mid drives (TSDZ2 with OSF (including my own SW mods), BBSHD, CYC Photon and ToSeven DM01). I have also owned three Brose Equipped bikes and a Luna X2 with ludicrous controller. I have also played with several Grin torque sensing hub drive setups (GMAC 10T, RH212 Std with statorade). Playing with ebikes is my hobby.

As far as DIY torque sensing 'quality', the Photon is hands above the rest. How much you realize this depends on your riding situation. If your riding at higher speeds where you have less torque advantage due to gearing, I agree many feel the same. Its when you are at the lowest gearing that the CYC shines.

IMHO, at higher speeds (20mph+), torque sensing is more of a convenience thing in not having to constantly change cadence based assist levels (like on BBSHD). When you get down to the low gears like 42tF/46tR that the CYC torque sensing quality shines.

In strictly MTB technical riding (8%+ rocky obstacles and ledges and roots on singletrack), the CYC is the only DIY solution that has worked for me. While not on par with my Brose Bikes its doable on the CYC. The BBSHD is laughable and the TSDZ2 is a close second (havnt tried the toseven yet). Being a SW engineer, I played with the TSDZ2 OSF to increase the torque sensor response but the TSDZ2 torque sensor had a horrible low pass filter with horrendous latency (youtube videos by OSF author show this). In the end my TSDZ2 failed after less than 1k miles due to axle bearing slop on the drive side and is now in a landfill somewhere.

For the longest time, my setup was BBSHD on one bike and CYC photon V1 on the other which was most of my riding (except pure MTB rides at 20 miles once a week on Turbo Levo or Luna X2). The Photon was for 'fitness days' and the BBSHD was for 'off days'. Yes, the CYC Photon can overheat and I always ran it without throttle and monitoring temps in 'unrestricted race mode'. My favorite and most efficient DIY setup.

I recently installed the ToSeven DM01 to replace the CYC Photon (for now). I blew the original DM01 controller at 52V 30A (about 1400W) within 10 rides. That initial DM01 setup (bought two years ago) had a big delay in power delivery and the onset of power was too high. The replaced controller (newer firmware, limited to 23A) is WAY BETTER. In fact, the only things I have changed on the default settings is removing the speed limits. For the rides I do on this bike(gravel rides, slightly technical), the DM01 is better suited than the CYC photon due to the better thermal characteristics and subsequent higher sustained power output.

The DM01 has its own set of problems though regarding the torque sensor. As it gets hotter the torque sensor voltage increases to the point that it can cause problems. A typical Dm01 stock setting is torque sensor base voltage is 0.7V with 0.9V required before assist is applied. On an extended 1000W push, I see the base voltage at 1.0V and have seen error messages which I think are attributed to this. The trick on the DM01 seems to be keeping it just below 1000W.

Im interested in the Photon V2 and will most likely buy one, would like to compare against my ToSeven DM01

I mostly do "fast" (bike speed, not motorcycle speed) rolling road rides. My TSDZ2 on OSF (and with cooling mod) feels very similar to Photon in those conditions where ride speed is determined by the bike gearing and the resulting cadence. I have a 42t chainring and 11-32 cassette, 26" wheels. I very rarely or really never need the lower few gears of that cassette, even on steepish (8%) road grades. Now, the Photon throttle in unrestricted mode is a different animal. I use that to deal with car traffic where extra speed in a couple of usual locations like to merge over into a left turn lane. Nice burst of speed but limited in time by heat generation.

I have a CYC X1 Pro Gen 2 on my FS MTB and have ridden singletrack trails with that. The torque sensor is OK but seems to have a little more dead zone before kicking in, taking a bit more of a pedal rev than I like. But otherwise works well on the trails... although that much power is overkill for our technical singletrack where speed is terrain limited. Photon would be plenty. But when I ride that bike on the trails I don't transport it in the car, I just do a road ride over and back so the power and speed come in handy that way. Damn thing is too noisy, though.

The e-bike part isn't really a hobby for me, more of a means to the end of having fun. So I am not going to try them all and I am not going to be tearing them apart and grafting on VESC controllers or anything like that. Messing with TSDZ2 OSF is about my limit for tinkering and even that gets to be a PITA. I just want them to work and be fairly reliable. I will likely get a Photon Gen 2 when it drops. Maybe a DM-01 after you guys work out all the bugs. Or a Proton if they turn out to be real.

I'm looking forward for this release, I have been on BBS02 for a long time, but now they have switched to CAN and are harder to program, so less of intresest. My current motor has 8000km on it so it will roll untill it bites the dust and hopefully this can be a good replacement.

Inrunner means smaller motor, could be lighter and even smaller in size than Gen1? We will see, I do not need all that power, today I use 48V battery and a limit on 10A, so not more than 540W on a fully charged battery. A Photon should be perfect, if they could lower the price to 600 USD that would be perfect :)
 
Life is seldom perfect, and it won't be here. If cost is really a concern, you might be able to pick up a NOS Gen 1 Photon at a discount or buy one of ours when we upgrade.

No. Inrunner means better cooling BUT a larger motor for the same torque. That's due to the rotor size and then having the stator around it. Seems that the Photon 2 will be both larger and heavier than the V1 and CYC have indicated this.

CYC made exactly the right design choice by going with outrunner for the Photon - for me. Absolutely perfect. YMMV.

TBH I'm surprised they listened to all the people complaining about the Photon power output, instead of just getting the Proton out there and keeping more people happy.

And TBH I don't get why people were complaining anyway - the Photon beats the pants of almost all OTS ebikes especially emtb for power and torque even when run conservatively. It is certainly illegal where I live and how much power do you really need?

I wonder why you ended up going mid drives exclusively? I am running hubs + VESC controllers (with custom code for torque sensing) and am generally very happy with them, but I want to try something new, looking to buy either the TSDZ8 OSF or CYC Photon V2.
