My mooncool Tk1folding was stolen but by the grace of God and the rapid response of the local police department it was recovered within an hour. Unfortunately when it was returned, the headlight/horn assembly had been broken off. I was unhappy with the horn from the beginning and who wouldn't want more light in front when they ride at night so instead of replacing the factory piece I decided to upgrade
I got out my multi meter and tested the voltage which three wires,a red, a blue and a black was quite easy and verified that the voltage was the same as the bike 48V. I ordered a 48-12V step down from Amazon and got an ooohgaah horn from harbor freight and also ordered a set of 4"LED "tractor " lights. Well, I ran the factory horn+and -through the step down and it works perfectly and I definitely turn heads when I sound off 📣of course everything was going to good.
The mounting holes for the lights had to be drilled out just a bit, no problem. They are rated at 12-36v so knowing DC current 48 will just make them brighter. I'm okay with shortening the lifespan a little. Okay run them series and they'll only think they're getting 24v again,, no problem. I wired them series and connected them to the factory system and when I tried turning them on, the factory breaker tripped and I lost my rear lights and of course had no power at the headlight, a simple power off and back on reset the system and my rear lights were back in operation. I thought and decided that just one light would be sufficient so I disconnected one and tried it again I hit the switch and it lit up perfectly and was nice and bright.
I had a meeting to attend so I got on my trike and headed out, made the meeting and it was dark when I left so I turned on my l lights after about five minutes I lost front and rear lights so I pulled into a convenience store parking lot and powered off and back on and my lights came on. To be safe I went in the store and rabbed a cold drink so it could cool down and climbed on and powered up and continued home. I decided an inline relay would solve my problems. I got a relay and wired it in and decided to run the new headlight system on my spare battery so I wired both up again and wired the spare battery through the relay with the factory headlight power supply acting as the trigger for the switch and when I turned on the headlight, even the relay is too much of a draw on the factory system and it trips the internal circuit breaker
I've been just wiring it directly to the spare battery when I ride at night which is often but would really like to be able to turn my headlight on and off from the factory controller instead of having to walk to the front basket and make a hard connection. I'm wondering if a few used as a switch would be a light enough draw to make it work. Any ideas? Thanks Jody
 
Was the relay fit for the light output of the controller? Some ebike controllers only give out
measly 6V for the lights, which isn't going to work w/say 12V relays.
 
Remember that relays can be found with all sorts of combinations of coil votlages vs contact ratings.
Indeed, which is why i asked if the relay was up to the job.
