It's missed me here the last couple days, though before that we got drenched pretty good the one night.

Looked like it was going to do it again tonight from the look of the clouds as I was heading home from work (with an unsuccessful pitstop at goodwill to see if they have any microwave ovens, since mine blew up last night). But it swerved west before it reached the valley. Still a chance that the one coming up from east of Tucson could reach us between now and morning, but I won't hold my breath.

Tomorrow ahs even more chance for rain, and if we get it probably at least as much as we got the other night...I'm hoping it doesn't hit us until *after* I get home, as I have to try goodwill again for the microwave hunt.

Here is what they are talking about this morning...
8-19 to 24 rain.jpg

I remember this one back in 1972. People were boarding up windows along the coast. We got no rain or wind but the surf was glorious.

Hurricane GwenEdit

Category 3 hurricane (SSHWS)
DurationAugust 22 – August 31
Peak intensity125 mph (205 km/h) (1-min); ≤941 mbar (hPa)
On August 22, a tropical depression formed from a disturbance. It immediately strengthened into a storm and was named Gwen. Gwen moved generally northwest, paralleling the coast of Mexico, and intensified into a hurricane on August 24. It then spent a few days heading west-northwest before resuming its original course. The hurricane became a major hurricane on August 27. After retaining that intensity for over a day, it rapidly weakened. Gwen became a tropical storm on August 29, weakened into a depression the next day, and dissipated just after that. Hurricane Gwen caused some concern for high surf in California, including a forecast for storm surge, but only the high surf materialized. Hurricane Gwen caused no deaths or damage.[4]

First measurable rain of the season last night. Barely measurable but enough to wash some of the dust off the car. More expected Friday night.
The official rain season here runs from October to September.

November 1st and warm here. I am expecting a dry winter.

0.25" since yesterday. I can finally turn off the irrigation, hopefully for the season.
Last season the total was right around 40", which is slightly above average.

Big story here is the wind, and snow on top of the mountains. No rain for us in our valley but some towards San Bernardino. Gusts of up to 20 mph here at the house, higher almost everywhere else.
Lows in the upper 30’s should turn the leaves on the ash tree yellow and they will probably drop all at once soon.

Well, it looks like the first "atmospheric river" of the season. Places up north are looking at over 10" of rain over the next week. Hopefully I'm in the Goldilocks area where it won't be too much or too little.

I’m calling it the anteater. Supposed to be bringing 0.25” of rain south of Point Conception on Saturday. First significant storm of the season.

Interesting story on the origin of one of the most popular weather catch phrases that’s bandied about today. Quite the waste of words IMO, but an easy way to quickly sensationalize a news story about weather which most folks find boring. Along with “atmospheric river” (love the quotation marks by the way) which is used to describe most every storm nowadays being a true description or not. Neither just “pops up from time to time” according to the article but nearly all the time.
Lol :p

4.3" here since yesterday morning. It rained all day and all night. Still raining.
Since the ground was completely dry to start with, it's just reaching saturation now.
The last precipitation I got before November was in early May.
6 months of essentially zero rain.
Season total for last year was around 40", so this storm has already dumped over 10% of the season total.

And it's going to keep on raining for a week it looks like...

Typically the headline which hooks the random reader for a storm which is forecast to bring only a 40% chance of rain up to 0.25” here. I phone weather app saying no rain here for the next ten days.
Can’t believe anyone these days.
:p
