What is Everyone using for a sidestand?

My converted mountain bike (Phoenix Cruiser) is pretty heavy and currently w/o any type of stand. Can anyone recommend anything? It's fine in the garage but It'd be nice to have something for when we're out and about. I'm afraid a regular sidestand won't be strong enough or will allow the...

11,000 watt-hours equal about a gallon of gasoline

Actually the DOE number for ICE energy conversion efficiency is closer to 15%. Well-to-wheels for petroleum products is very efficient; this type of calculation makes a good rule of thumb!

Emergency "Bad Boy" ultra Compact charger

I don't think the capacitors on the output side of the bridge do anything - the batteries act as a large capacitor. According to EV guru Lee Hart, the inductor goes in series with one of the AC input wires and the capacitor goes directly across the AC line, before the inductor. (I'm building a...

Thanks for your input. This will go on a Phoenix Cruiser system that we just got going. My son loves it (and is taking it easy for now) but I don't want him to commit batricide...

Wild And Reckless Power System Design Ideas

Don't let the naysayers slow you down Safe - you should actually try to build a scaled-down version of something for shts and grns. It may not work but what will it have cost you? At least you're thinking outside of the box. (Just make sure you protect against letting the smoke out.) good luck

    Ah or Wh

Wikipedia says that: "Historical note The ampere was historically a derived unit—being defined as 1 coulomb per second. Therefore the coulomb, rather than the ampere, was the SI base electrical unit. In 1960 the SI system made the ampere the base unit. [1]"...

why are comercial EV's all 48volts?

Methinks that's RMS so peaks will be higher. I guess it'd also depend on distance from the central office, etc. I did too, weekends and summers for about 4 years. I once bounced a screwdriver off a customer's ceiling when I got nailed! They didn't know what was going on!

why are comercial EV's all 48volts?

A couple of random thoughts: - there are commercial controller manufacturers other than the Zilla that make higher voltage controllers (Curtis is a popular one, also Belktronix and Kelly is supposedly making one too) - telephone systems work on 48 VDC (ringing is higher - an AC signal on top...

    Cheap 'n easy plug-in Prius mod =)

Your ideas are good but I doubt they could be implemented w/o a lot more work. For one thing the battery pack is only good for a mile or so in EV mode using stock software, so two packs won't extend range that much (they're only 1.3 kwh nominal). The ICE is spun to the appropriate speed by the...

    Replacement forks question

Thanks for the help. This is a 17 year-old Fuji that's had a rough life. I may look for a different bike but this one is pretty comfortable.

    Replacement forks question

The bike I'm converting has damaged forks and I thought I'd replace them. The ones I grabbed from a parts bike have a different length stem (longer) so the threads stop too soon. I could always thread more of the stem but would also like to investigate steel replacements. Does anyone know of...

    Smaller Front Wheel?

I see some bikes with smaller wheels... besides any gearing issues is there any advantage to dropping the front from, say, 26" to 24" (I'd use a front hub motor)? Generally the larger the diameter, the better the ride but I'm wondering if there's anything I'm overlooking. TIA

    Throttle style

Hi everyone: I'm interested in opinions on throttle style (thumb versus regular Magura style). I've been riding motorcycles a long time and am used to regular throttle but there may be advantages to the thumb lever type too. Open to any comments, opinions, etc. TIA

    Motor/Kit Selection Question

Thanks for the info fechter. Do they switch in more windings or is there actually some type of physical change? How about weight? Sorry, I know these are basic questions but I'm trying to accelerate my learning curve pre-purchase.

    Motor/Kit Selection Question

Hi All, I've been lurking here for awhile but am interested in moving forward with something for my son. Probably a father/son type of project. I've recently converted a small m-cycle and Toyota pickup. (http://www.austinev.org/evalbum/1428) Anyway, I've been wondering about experience...
