Worth it to get a “premium” FS bike for ebike build?

Let me try to simplify the thread/question as much as possible... If I'm going 25 mph and run over a bumpy patch of uneven pavement while my ass is on the seat, how much smoother and more comfortable will it feel on a "nice" FS bike vs a "cheap" FS bike? :)

Worth it to get a “premium” FS bike for ebike build?

If I decided to go with a nice bike with disc brakes (either mechanical or hydraulic) but I stick with a disc-brake-compatible hub motor (such as a Crystalyte H3540), is there anything in particular I'd need to watch out for to make sure it would work with a given bike? Having never done a...

Worth it to get a “premium” FS bike for ebike build?

No, pretty flat round these parts. After a bit more reading, you've got me thinking those BBSHD videos by "Bruno" got me expecting a higher top speed than it can actually deliver. I guess I'm still a bit torn/undecided between hub and mid-drive, especially since I've never owned or ridden a...

Worth it to get a “premium” FS bike for ebike build?

Hi All. Looking for some opinions.... I'm planning to do a new ebike build with a a BBSHD kit and a (not-yet-chosen) full-suspension bike, and I'm wondering if it'd be worth the extra money to buy a "nice"/”premium” bike with nice suspension components and brakes for maybe $1000-$2000 vs a...

    BMSBattery.com's "Case-08" Battery Pack

PeterT12, I'd concur with pretty much everything in your post. Sorry to have worried you with my initial misimpressions. Yeah, that space is for a controller, which I got in my battery. The problem for me was that space for the controller is so long that it pushes the mounting holes too far...

    BMSBattery.com's "Case-08" Battery Pack

The problem is the opposite. It's too far down and hits the seat tube. This hadn't occurred to me. Sounds like this is a pretty easy thing for a local bike shop to do? If so, it might be worth doing, as it would resolve my water infiltration concerns.

    BMSBattery/ECityPower Experience

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I finally did file a dispute against BMSBattery with PayPal, and that was enough to prod them to finally communicate with me through email. And it turned out that there was a solution to my main problem of the battery pack not mounting securely to the frame...

    BMSBattery.com's "Case-08" Battery Pack

I just updated my original post on this thread with new pertinent information that puts the Case-08 battery in a significantly better light. You can read it above, but I'll also copy/paste the text here. (See above for the photos.)

    BMSBattery.com's "Case-08" Battery Pack

UPDATE (9-29-15): Turns out that the Case-08 battery case design isn't nearly as bad as I had originally posted... After weeks of BMSBattery refusing to talk to me at all about my problems or my desire to return my Case-08 battery (due to the issues mentioned in the original post, below), I...

    BMSBattery/ECityPower Experience

Yes. I had the screws tightened as tight as I felt I could without risking cracking the plastic underneath the screw head. So pretty tight. I thought about that. But since this install was essentially a gift for my Dad, I didn't want it to look like crap. Plus using tie straps or hose...

    BMSBattery/ECityPower Experience

The issue is that (in my personal/professional assessment as a mechanical engineer) the design of the plastic mounting bracket is deficient to the extent that I'm fairly certain that the mounting bracket will break after a relatively short period of use. And even if the bracket doesn't break...

    BMSBattery/ECityPower Experience

I think I can hear some people snickering already. Yes, I rolled the dice on ordering a battery pack + controller from BMSBattery and got burned. I tried one of their new "Case-08" frame-mounted battery packs, principally due to the enticingly low-profile shape of the case, but it...

Advice for replacing a BMC V1 clutch?

I built my Dad an ebike with a BMC V1 motor running on a 36V 25A 6FET controller, and its clutch seized up during a ride. (The controller also fried.) So now I’m trying to decide how to proceed to repair the motor. Here are my thoughts: 1. Purchase a new BMC V4 clutch assembly from EbikesSF...

    Electro Ride LLC

So, this is kind of a weird question, but does anyone know if Brian is still around / alive / not-in-a-coma? The BMC V1 motor that I put on my Dad's bike last year is messed up and I've tried emailing and calling Brian numerous times in the last 6 weeks for troubleshooting tips with no reply. :?

Stolen Ebike Recovered! Big Thanks to Mike at ElectricRider

Update: The local police put out a press release this morning announcing the arrest of the guy they believe stole my dad's bike, plus another separate guy, both caught in the act of stealing bikes last week. The guy who stole my dad's bike was caught cutting a lock with bolt cutters in the...

Stolen Ebike Recovered! Big Thanks to Mike at ElectricRider

Preliminary word is that the local police think they caught the same guy in the act of stealing another bike earlier this week. IDK about getting any money out of him, but if they can successfully pin the theft of my Dad's ebike on him, he could be seeing a minimum 1 year in jail. (The cutoff...

Stolen Ebike Recovered! Big Thanks to Mike at ElectricRider

Kind of a long story, but my Dad's ebike (which I had built for him and given to him for his birthday earlier this year) was stolen while locked up at a train station a couple weeks ago. I found it for sale on Craigslist later that day (for probably only 10% of what it's actually worth) and...

    GT i-drive 4.0 Build

I love the custom battery enclosure. Very slick. Did you do anything special to keep water from coming in through where the wires exit the enclosure? And, also, I noticed you have the low-voltage monitors/alarms hooked up inside the enclosure. On my ebike, I didn't include these in my...

    Crystalyte front 408, noise issue

Hi Y'all! I'm having an issue with a new motor that I just got, and I'm hoping someone might be able to help me out with figuring out the problem. It's a front Crystalyte 408 motor, and when I first bolted it onto my bike, it made a peculiar noise, shown here: R7uEW4cvdZY I think I was able...

    Copenhagen wheel

I'm not sure what to think about the spokes. How are they connect to the hub? It doesn't look like a weld... I can't tell. If anything, I'd be more worried about the spokes braking, especially since I can't tell how it would be repaired.

    Copenhagen wheel

When I first read the stories about the "Copenhagen Wheel", I thought it was the same thing as the Greenwheel that MIT folks were working on, which could be plugged in and charged. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29259226/ Without external charging, this is the stupidest thing ever. Some of the...

My 30ah Ping battery shuts down at 16ah

It's been quite awhile since the original post, so hopefully you've got this figured out by now. If not, here's my guess. To answer your question on calibration... yes, you do need to calibrate the CA. Specifically in your case, it sounds like the R_shunt value might be off. When I first...

FYI: Green wheel turns pedal bike into electric hog

Despite being very skeptical about the claims made about performance/cost, I'd really love to see the insides to see how they're packaging all of the components, especially when the hub only appears to be about the size of a Clyte 4xx. I'd really like to know... Are the batteries in the middle...

Upload Your Circuit Schematics & Requests Here...

Hi All, I have a bike with a Crystalyte 407 motor and two 36V 10Ah battery packs, one NiMH and one Li-Ion, currently wired in parallel. I'm looking to add a switch that will let me switch between 36V in parallel and 72V in series. The very first post in this thread shows a wiring diagram for...
