2018 Torque Arm Tests, Splined Interface Design and Tabbed Washers

@martinev That's interesting. I ended up making a completely new torque arm out of 6061 because that is what Grin uses. They've had these hubs in service for quite a while now and places like UW Mailing Services push them hard, so I feel like issues would have already shown up if 6061 was an...

    Electric liveaboard catamaran project

Have you started sailing? I would expect that to get you much higher speeds. Motor sailing for "free" should really help your upwind pointing on the catamaran. Your speeds are much lower than what most cruising boats accept, but it sounds like they work well for you because you don't require...

2018 Torque Arm Tests, Splined Interface Design and Tabbed Washers

Outside thoughts are appreciated. It just sounded like you hadn't read the usage case and so the thoughts weren't compatible with what the bike needed to do. To close the loop I had a good thread with Justin on this. He says that they have run into this issue with other postmount frames, so...

2018 Torque Arm Tests, Splined Interface Design and Tabbed Washers

I have a proposed solution that I think will work without compromising strength too much. I'm going to mill off of the interfering part of the outer torque arm, but leave the ring intact that fully wraps the inner splined adapter. I may have to file about 2mm of the brake mount off to make...

2018 Torque Arm Tests, Splined Interface Design and Tabbed Washers

I 'think that you may have skipped over my design brief, this isn't a standard e-bike. It is a bike for trail repairs and will be ridden straight up a hill (~2000 feet of climbing in about 3-4 miles) with lots of stops at ~8 mph (faster isn't an option with the trail site lines). On a green...

2018 Torque Arm Tests, Splined Interface Design and Tabbed Washers

The photo is the inboard side of the left dropout. The bike's stock rear hub was a Shimano Deore, which has steel locknuts that will leave an impression on an aluminum frame. The rear disk caliper is needed since this will be used on MTB trails. The regen feature is being used as a drag...

2018 Torque Arm Tests, Splined Interface Design and Tabbed Washers

This bike has a specific mission that does benefit from regen braking. I see regen as being like a drag brake on a tandem though, not a replacement for real brakes. The bike is being built to carry trail maintenance gear up MTB trails for clearing trails in NE Washington. Based on my own...

2018 Torque Arm Tests, Splined Interface Design and Tabbed Washers

I've built a GMAC rear wheel for a Benno Carry-On cargo bike and have run into an interference issue with the GMAC's splined torque arm (the design of which is discussed in this thread). The Benno frame has a postmount brake tab which assumes that the locknut on the rear hub is 30mm or smaller...

Cycle Analyst V3 preview and first beta release

My back-pedal regen firwmare (3.2b3) does have that feature. I was actually glad to find that part of the thread this morning because I couldn't understand why the braking stopped just before the bike came to a complete stop. It seems like my bike still has trouble knowing when to go again...

Cycle Analyst V3 preview and first beta release

I just setup a bike with an AllAxle v3 rear hub and am experimenting with regen for the first time. My setup: AllAxle rear, PhaseRunner v6, CAv3 with v3.2b3 firmware. I'm currently using a Sempu BB for torque/PAS (but my AllAxle has the torque sensor so I can switch if that would help). I'm...

    G370/Baserunner issues after cable replacement

The motor cable on my Bafang G370 (this is like a small G311) had a faulty connection, so I took it apart and replaced it yesterday. Now my Baserunner is complaining with these errors after power-up: The weird thing is that if I clear faults and use a throttle the motor will spin just fine...

    Sempu Torque Sensor Help

This is an old thread, but the data point may be useful. I just replaced a Sempu after over 2 years of daily use. The failure was nothing mechanical, the data cable was pulled a little hard through the frame and rubbed bare. I better protected it with the new one and expect to get more than 2...

    Geared Hub vs Mid-Drive?

A big mid-drive con for me is that it gives you less flexibility in designing the system (controller, motor, bottom bracket, cranks are all a fixed system). Many mid-drive systems (like the popular Bafang BBS series) don't have torque sensing bottom brackets. I find torque sensing pretty...

    Sempu Torque Sensor Help

The E-Rider sensor doesn't work with decent cranks. I don't want wide and low quality cranks on my bike and the Sempu lets me use low q-factor cold forged Ritchey Logic cranks. I've had good luck with the Sempu, I do know friends who have had issues but that could almost always be connected...

    Sempu Torque Sensor Help

Where can these be purchased now that Grin isn't carrying them? Do other suppliers includes a CAv3 compatible cable? I understand why Grin stopped carrying them, but prefer the Sempu to the other options that I've seen and used. I have a 6 year old Thun with lots of miles that will need...

    Small hub motor

I'm replying for the sake of the archives. I have a G370 on my commuter bike, it was an upgrade from a G31x to get a lighter and more compact motor. Something to be aware of: the G370 won't fit with some dropouts, it is best with fork dropouts that are on the inside of the fork blade (instead...

GRIN baserunner with "shark" pack that has no controller case like EM3EV's?

They sell a version with Anderson connectors for that use: https://ebikes.ca/shop/electric-bicycle-parts/controllers/baserunner-z9-stand-alone.html

Shamrock, 25 foot sailboat electric conversion with an ebike hub motor

Justin: This is really cool, thanks for sharing. I'm another sailor/ev/bike nerd and have been interested in electric inboard options for my sailboat one day. There isn't a lot of real data out there so it is great that you have figured out ways to gather so much data, especially the strain...

2019 Motor Simulator, Mid-drives and other updates

G370 is in the simulator. The hub looks awesome! When can I buy one from ebikes.ca? Normalized for Kv it looks a lot like the G311: https://www.ebikes.ca/tools/simulator.html?bopen=true&motor=MG310_STD&grade=0&hp=0&motor_b=MG370_10T&hp_b=0&grade_b=0&axis=mph&mass=90&mass_b=90&kv=7.29 At high...

How to plan how much battery I need for a TSDZ2?

There are a ton of variables, the most important one for my battery life is the max speed at which I get assistance. If I set this at about 30kmh I will get incredible battery life because on flats I just use human power, but on hills the assist starts to kick in. If I bump it up to 35kmh my...

How to convert anderson plugs to Higo plugs?

The BaseRunner comes with a very short Higo cable, so most bikes need an extension anyway. Making a custom Higo to Anderson adapter is cheap and easy and will let you combine your parts. I've always used Bafang Higo cables and cut them in half, they come with standard color coded wires.

    Sempu Torque Sensor Help

It's okay for the CAv3 to flip to "custom". The Sempu settings just get you close, but every device will have slightly different components and require zeroing out. I hope that your new BB solves the problems and that Sempu reliability goes up!

    Sempu Torque Sensor Help

You should test by seeing if the CAv3 can show pedal RPMs and pedal torque (in newton meters). There is a calibration step to zero out the pedal torque. This will let you see if it is a programming issue with the torque assist in the CAv3, or just a basic sensor issue. The installation of...

    Love the Baserunner, suggested improvements

Yes, you can pull the Baserunner out of it's carrier and mount it differently. It mounts with 4 M3 screws and so you can make a different aluminum heatsink for a custom mounting. I plan on doing this soon with my regular bike. A downside is that the Baserunner has very short power cables...

    Love the Baserunner, suggested improvements

I have two bikes with the Base Runner now, and one uses a Hailong battery case. It works great and cleaned up the installation. A standalone version would be nice too.
