Votol EM150/2 "communication abnormal" issue w/ CAN Bus

I want to report a success here, and exactly what I have to do to get past the 'communication abnormal' issue with the Votol software with a CANbus controller which has plagued me for at least a year or two. Finally got it to work. Setup: -Votol EM-150 S/P-2 (SP2) (the SP uses CAN...

    60V and 72V TC / Elcon 1.8kW chargers

Oooh sorry just saw this. I'm not sure in Europe, but a simple J1772 adapter is what I use, since these Elcon/TC chargers work on 240V (J1772 voltage). You could also hard-wire but since I used both a 120V outlet at home and a J1772 charger at work, I did not bother hard-wiring. Both of these...

Some thoughts on the future of automotive EVs

I hear you on the tax credit, but even at 35k a model 3 trounces anything in that price range. Insurance is $120 a month for full coverage. Considering I pay $60 per month for liability on a 1997 Mazda pickup, I think it’s not unreasonable.

Some thoughts on the future of automotive EVs

Comparing my 2023 LFP model 3 to a 2023 Toyota Corolla XSE. I paid $28k (w/ $7500 credit) Corolla $27k Power: 271hp vs 169hp Storage: 23 cubic feet vs 13cubic feet Annual fuel cost (20k miles): $600 vs $2000 Warranty: 5yr/50k, 100k powertrain vs 3yr/36k, 60k powertrain. My annual road trip to...

First Electric Motorcycle Conversion Advice (1974 Honda CB360)

I used a QS138v3 with an EM150, 60v 150A on my ‘74 Yamaha build. On the flat it did 55-60mph. Put 2000 miles on it, mostly at top speed. Rebuilding now for 70mph. The motor should be fine!

QS just released a single-sided swingarm motor kit

Just got this email from QS. Pretty exciting for me or anyone thinking through a swingarm-mounted scooter conversion. Anyone seen or ordered this kit??

    Don’t recharge just replace

NIO has around 1500 battery swap stations for their cars in China. It’s working very well over there for that specific economic/social use case but hasn’t spread beyond those borders. Personally, I just took a road trip in an ‘average’ EV (LFP model 3) and faster charging would not have...

    60V and 72V TC / Elcon 1.8kW chargers

Hello all, selling two TC (known in the US under the Elcon brand) HK-H 1.8kW chargers from my electric motorcycle project (now going with a higher-voltage system). If you're not familiar, these are beefy, bulletproof, high-power IP67 chargers which run off both 120V and 240V. Power output is...

    Battery advice needed

What range are you looking for? “Intermittent operation” over a couple of hours could be 5 miles or 75 miles. That’s the biggest factor on battery size, energy capacity. The next consideration is how much power you need. You say you only need to go 30mph max, but you chose a controller produces...

Where to buy EM 200 96V Controller?

For a car??? I don't think the EM series is up to it... my EM150SP2 is a great controller but it begins to de-rate if you actually pull 150A for more than 30 seconds or so on my electric motorcycle. Actual continuous discharge is more like 120A. I wouldn't actually count on 200A. In any case...

Chinese 84V (72V/20S) Chargers from Ebay -- thoughts, experiences

I like Elcon / TC HK-H 1.8kWh (‘enable mode’, aka non-CAN). Around $300-$350 shipped. Great, heavy, bulletproof unit which can be used with either 120 or 220. The supplier programs your desired max charge, you can specify 4.05v, 4.2v, etc… Charges at 800w at 120 and 1.8kw at 220. It is fan...

    Em-150 rates for 120 amps?

FWIW after having used my EM150s for a while I think 120A is a better max continuous current than 150A. My bike could only maintain a 150A current for a minute or so before it began to derate to 100A. 120A is pretty solid and can continue about that current for long stretches of highway.

    Career cold start suggestions

All I can say is I was in your shoes a few years ago when I made my decision, no background in that sector and now I am working for a major EV company. I started an associates' in engineering technology, began building EVs at home, started a business that ended up losing money but looks great on...

motorcycle odds and ends - 300A BMS, DKD display, Fuses, DC-DC, Shunt, throttle

This is leftover stuff from an electric motorcycle build. Just clearing out some space. All prices are very OBO, more interested in stuff being used than sitting around. Is EVComponents.com a trustworthy place to purchase batteries from?

I ordered an elcon charger from them last year, took a loooong time and didn’t come with the exact config I ordered. Also check the shipping, I think the prices get padded there. As I recall there are a few websites which look identical and direct back to evcomponents.com (same support email)...

    QS 138 70H with Gearbox

Just a note for anyone considering this motor: It sounds awesome. Those straight-cut gears have a very good sound. Not noisy by any means, but it does cover up the noise of the chain drive pretty well. I'm at 1,600 miles so far on my conversion.

    QS 138 70H with Gearbox

At 60v@120A (~7kw continuous) I can cruise at 55mph with the v3. No field weakening. The motor is not the bottleneck. To go faster I would either change the gearing and add amps or go with a higher voltage battery. The V3 just allows you to simplify your drivetrain so you don’t need custom...

    Votol EM-100 & EM-150 controllers

Although I managed to successfully connect a year ago through some voodoo (I don’t remember exactly but it involved uninstalling the prolific drivers every single time), I am now unable to connect my EM150SP controller to the software at all. I’ve wasted a few hours already and I’m at the point...

2003 Cadillac CTS Conversion w/ 30 mile range

Last year I saw 2011 Nissan Leaf's with 30 miles of range go for $3K in Texas. $2K was plausible for that time with a quick buyer and a motivated seller. EV prices have shot up a lot the last year, but even a u cheaper than converting a 2000s Cadillac. Converting a modern luxury sedan to...

Wiring one power switch to two controllers

A controller won't do anything unless it has both power and ground (red and black). Both controllers need to be wired to the battery at both ends. Of course you need to be sure your battery is powerful enough to supply enough current (amps) to both loads.

Charging 72v DIY motorcycle of street EV chargers?

Oh and just so you know the only standards you need to worry about are the standards for Level 2 charging (which includes most parking-lot chargers, Tesla destination chargers and home chargers). The other charger you'll find are CCS DC fast chargers, but you cannot use a DC fast charger for a...
