Well, it's official, today, at 10am, i signed on the dotted line....

Last monday, Nov 26 :
( this is a rough writeup while things were fresh in my mind, i will need to re-read this and fix typos etc.... but it saves a whole lot of repeating )

Can you imagine !... yes, that's right.. i no longer have a " job " .

:p

Strange, how business is done these days.

You're a good man with skills and experience. Beat the bushes and see what pops up.

BUMMER it ain't SUMMER!!!

Dang, Ypedal. One of the things that makes me glad to be real old, don't have to put up with the bs anymore. Saw the same thing happen to co-workers, and at my last annual review my supervisor informed me the only reason I was still there was because I planned to retire when I turned 62. And that was after over 20 years with the company as a senior programmer/analyst.

Good luck at sorting things out. Hope you find a better job that you enjoy more. Keep us up to date, we care.

Oh.. .. I feel sorry for you Ypedal, i've just read your blog and thru the words you wrote, i was really feeling what you have feel... omg !

I remember last when that arrived to me a couples of years ago, that wierd feeling on the return to home.. etc.. and all those bad luck that also strangly happen the same same day.

Remember me that old great epic movie Falling down with Micheal Douglas... ..

Making some cleaning in your home ( life too as well) will certainly help and make you feel better.

We support you Ypedal and As you said, E-S is yoru second home as well.. as many of us

I wish you things that get better over the next days/weeks

Doc

The last "Real" job I had, I was fired 3 times.

That lead up to me never having to cover a Bosses ass, forever more. 8) 8)

Enjoy the freedom. Start a consulting business. You are good with words. Good Luck 8)

I dont feel sorry one bit, this is by far, better than quitting or getting fired, i keep my benefits and get paid but get to stay home for the next 30 weeks.. time for a change of scenery.

Really, i dont want another " job ", i am completely willing to work 80 hours per week, but i am determined to make a living from home, somehow. Exactly how, i dont yet know, i would love to make it in the ebike biz but that's something i'm already quite well aware, a loosing battle if you like to eat more than one meal a day...

I'm still cant believe it, it seems surreal, but as real as the ink on that paper was today... no turning back.....

Whilst change is never easy, often you can make it work to your advantage.
Better job, more pay, closer location, better boss , etc etc.. You just have to be patient to make it happen.
I have been in your place. Initially it hurts to think you are not needed anymore, but that is not the reason you are let go.
These days its all a simple financial decision combined with some random decision making by someone who you have probably never met. The lesson to learn here is there is no security of employment in modern corporations, and consequently no benefit for employees to feel any loyalty to their employer. Sad situation , but true.

Have a good break, enjoy Xmas, and good luck with your next job.

Sad to hear Gaston but, could be for the best, as HillHater eludes to, this
actually could be a BIG blessing in disguise...I wish you all the best in this new chapter
of your life buddy...Wanna come visit Oz in your time off? can put you up long as you want to stay :)

thx for the feedback guys..

This forum is closer to family than my actual relatives, i wanted to post about it last week but had to finalize things first. Not everyone knows yet but the news is spreading..

Felt weird today walking thru the centre for the last time.... gave the royal wave to everyone and the one finger salute to the " guys " as i walked by while they were on the phones stressing with customers.. lol.... i really dont miss that place at all.

Cliche, but one door closing means another door opening. Enjoy the down time and I know you'll find the right gig soon enough. All the best to you!

Sorry to hear about your situation YPedal. I'm sure you'll find something even better than your last job. When one door closes, many other open. Enjoy your time off and best of luck.

hey Gaston, you have skills. I wouldnt worry about it. Im in the same boat at the moment after just finishing my masters and at least you have 16 years experience.

Sounds like a new opportunity.. Id bet in 6 months to a year you will look back and say "man they sure did me a favor Thanks".

Based on what I know you seem like a very capable person who's skills include seeing to the heart of a problem and being able
to work with people to resolve.

I have had a lot of jobs and 1/2 of those have been on the end of a help desk line.. while learning it's a good place to be , but you
do hit that spot where you are stagnant and the new knowledge is pretty rare.

I have faith in you YPedal and I look forward to what you do next. Glad we get to be a part of it.

Cheers.

Welcome to Club Redundant - population, us :)

I was unable to win any ARC grants this round, so my contract ended two weeks ago. I too get severance which will see me through to January, and by then I will need to find myself a real job to pay for Voltron Evo.

It's a good feeling but it took a few days to realise it. In academia, you never really leave you just co-author papers with PhD students...

Best of luck buddy, and as KiM says, we hope to see you in the southern hemisphere some time soon ;)

Now to apply your skill to something that fulfills you. eBikes!!

An ending is just a beginning :D .enjoy youre freeish time.and dont go starting a new project, recycle the old into new.most of all have some fun! 8)

16 years in Tech support - I would have gone postal and shot everyone. You my friend, have some serious patience.

Take some time for yourself, find what makes you happy. Don't start looking straight away, its a bad time to look now anyway, any rejection you get now will just get you down.

You will find something better than where you were, that suits you better. Sometimes money isn't everything either.

Don’t worry Gaston… you are so devoted to everyone!... someone up there will remember you as we all do.

I have lost my job too at the begining of October and I should say there is not such bad experience as being over 50 and fighting to get a decent job back into a society that reject old timers… (nowadays employers wants us only for cheap labor… what happen then if there are no more exchanged in knowledge)

Any way… wishing you simply the best to come and a Happy New Years to you and all your family.

don't believe it. money is everything. being broke and no work is no fun. and don't start drinking.

for me: 20 years, 10 months and 28 days. but i only had a job for 9.5 years, mostly 100 hr weeks though, so close enuff in total sentenced time served.

i am actually now finishing some remodeling on this house i started over 31 years ago while i was just graduating with my masters. all that stuff came in between. actually i now can do a much better job than i could back then. i know more but don't have the strength or stamina to do the work: windows, insulation, heat, doubled square footage, built the four charging spots into my driveway apron. 40 yards of concrete, doubled the footage from 1700 to 3400.

why not go back to school? i know you don't drive, so that would keep you in home based business? have friends who you could partner with for stuff or do you already have a business plan?

it is the shock of not being in that same job, the withdrawal phase that is mind bending initially, but i found it gave me the time to get myself reacquainted with stocks and the real world, the financial and economic reality we dwell inside.

i had an interest in the markets when i was a kid and then again while still in grad school the last time, but once i started working i had no time for it.

but now, once the job was gone, it has become my full time job. this is where i hang out to chill from the day to day trading. it works for me, maybe you wanted to do other stuff you put off.

to get here, i would drive down to golden, colorado once a week and spend an afternoon in the Colorado School of Mines library photocopying monographs on petroleum frontiers and the oil and gas geology to develop the knowledge base that i use now.

in just 6-10 months of focus, reading up using some of the best available monographs that were only present there at the school of mines. once i had the free time, i was able to operate pretty much like i had spent several years in grad studies in petroleum and sedimentary geology. being older and more mature you can get more from school than when you are younger. but i am a permanent student, you may be into different stuff.

just don't let it get you down, but i still wish i was doing the same stuff. it takes younger smarter guys, i met some of them after wards, sharp as tacks, and i realize that the entire group i was part of is now all gone. laid off in the 20 years since when H-P shrank to increase profits. now in one fell swoop some ignorant directors have totally destroyed the company that we worked so hard to create.

all just to please dave packard, he was just the greatest guy to work for. we felt so bad because they had spent 400 million building the plants and the clean rooms and the technology and people and engineers and just huge project, that was basically a flop, we were bypassed by IBM and the PS-1. that was 400 million, enormous amount. they just blew 11 billion for a phony company because of the stupid board of directors who run the place now. but between him and bill hewlett, and stanford, the entire world was changed. all the talent that came from H-P to create silicon valley. jobs, wozniak are the most famous. for leaving. but it was bill hewlett's interest in steve jobs that made all the difference in the world for steve jobs and where he ended up mentally.

getting sentimental, missing work does that to you.

Just remember, as long as you can say these words, you'll always have a job: "Would you like fries with that?"
