24Vac, 24Vdc LED's??? (Now working off grid)

I am planning a solar lighting system (Battery storage)...

I have mistakenly ordered 24v ac Led's mr16 :oops: Before cancelling the order will they be ok on my 24vDC system?.

The reason I ask is some of the same led's bulbs on the same site although lower wattage state AC or DC?..but not my one's I have order just AC :evil: is it a misprint?..

They may work; if you can't cancle the orde rand get the right ones, I guess you could test them when they arrive.

But if you can cancel and order the ones you want it's always better. ;)

I use "12VAC" MR16 LED units for my turn signals on CrazyBike2, presently on a 12VDC system. They work, and are bright enough to be seen easily in daylight, and at night make amber spotlights/area lights in the direction I'm turning. :lol:

Trouble is the stated AC/DC Led's are only 5w 500lmn, the ones I ordered are 9w 600lmn but states AC only? I want high power for home install...

But I think I'm getting closer to the truth "hope you don't mind the link" but these bulbs (not what I have ordered) state AC/DC on the bulb but in the description states AC only :roll:

Well, they will *use* more power--9W of power to get 600 lumens, which is ~67 lumens per watt, or 5W of power to get 500 lumens, which is 100 lumens per watt.

MUCH MUCH better deal for the latter ones, based on power efficiency, and will also make less heat as a byproduct of that.

For myself, I'd want to find the most efficient lumens-per-watt I could get out of lighting that runs off a battery, especially. Unless there is a specific reason to use only one bulb in any particular place, I'd rather use several smaller but more efficient ones to get the required amount of light, than one big one that is less efficient. That also often means better actual illumination, too, because you don't just have one spot or area of light that's bright, fading to darkness away from it--you can space the lights out so they more evenly light up the area. Depends on what they're for, I guess.

As to whether the AC will work on DC...sometimes they do, sometiems they don't. Depends on how they made any power converters inside, or current limiting electronics, etc.

I've even used household AC-type CFL bulbs on my bike's motor's battery, and some work, some don't.

What it comes down to is that unless they say they will work on your voltage and type of power supply, there's no way to know until you try them. :(

What I have done is kept the original order and ordered the other one's aswell, if the AC one's don't work I'm sure I'll find a use for them...

Just an update as I have received my bulbs :D

Pleased to confirm both have AC/DC stamped on them although the description stated "AC ONLY" and sure enough both work really really well on 12 and 24vdc so really pleased..

However strangely enough the more powerful 9w 600lmn ones are not as bright as the 5w 500lmn ones so I have ordered more of the 5w as the are amazingly good for a little old MR11 my only grip is the narrow beam so looking for some idea's to defuse the light to change it from a spot light to a beam light..

One idea I have come up with is believe it or not, it's cheaper to buy a cheap $2 3w 240/120v smd globe light and use the defuses fitted to transfer to the MR11 :lol: I bet if I did find separate defuses for sale they would be more than the $2 I have paid for a complete bulb :idea: ... But I don't think the exist separately.

Anyways really struggling to find some 12/24v LED B22 Globe bulbs(would like to know if any available) so until they are readily available I'll keep playing with the MR11's...It is fun!! :D
 
And this is what I did with them..OFF GRID LIGHTING!!!.. :mrgreen:

I am now on free energy for my complete home lighting and it feels great!!! :D

here's the modified MR16 spot lights with fitted globe diffusers with various adaptors.


This is my charge controller set up in the garage hooked up to 210 ah deep cycle batteries at 12v..

I removed 960w of a mix of CFL and incandescent "grid" lighting,
Now I have better/brighter instant light at 55watts total all bulbs (5w 500lm each) and best of all, All off grid :D with a draw of my battery bank of around 416ma per bulb so loads of power left over in the morning when my Solar panels (1x250w) start charging the battery..

Here's my cost approx.

250w solar panels (free) as they where damaged.
bulbs £22
defusers £12
adaptors £9
batteries £10 secoundhand (got a bargain there!)
fuses and wiring £25
dc isolation switches £22
charge controller £37
Consumer unit with Mcb's x2 and 2 pole main switch £51
Bits and pieces and experimenting £25..

I have tested the batteries and I can see 5 years out of them before I need to think about replacing them. I will be working out if there is a saving here or should I just have bought expensive £15 a bulb, Ac LED lighting and stayed on grid?..(not as much fun)

Even so It has been great fun and I have learnt sooooooooo much over this couple of weeks of collecting bits and putting it together...
