Getting 4 - 36V 10Ah Lithium Batteries. Will wire in parallel and series to get 72V 20Ah

How should I test them? Been busy building a bomb shelter. Do Lithium Batteries explode and catch on fire during charging? Discharging? When?

Remember reading on this forum about someone using light bulbs and sockets wired in series to create load to test batteries. They used parts from Allied Electronics http://www.alliedelec.com Search and can not find information.

Want to test each 36V 10Ah Lithium Battery Pack separately.

Thanks for all your help with Electric Bike Project # 2

Do the batteries have a BMS built in?

Most fires occur due to overcharging or physical damage as far as I can tell. Overdischarge below the minimum recommended voltage is bad too.

During discharge, it would be good to have the load automatically disconnect when the low voltage limit is reached. I think Matt used a relay and a resistor to make something like that. A BMS usually has this feature built-in.

It's also cool if you can accurately measure how much energy you actually get out of the pack during testing. If you're not around when the battery runs out, you might not know how long it lasted. A DrainBrain kind of thing would be ideal.

Marty,
I've read about so many lithium fires, enough to literally scare me into building my pack with emoli cells. Most flare ups were caused by the so called SMART chargers detecting the wrong number of cells, thinking its charging 7s when actually the pack is a 6s for example. For testing it would be good to have a DrainBrain.

Still working on the bomb shelter. Still waiting for battery shipment. Now I need some type of electrical load to test batteries. This is what the electrical wizard and I come up with.

Test each 36V 10Ah battery separately

Use:
Resistor 30ohm
Lamp Socket
Incandescent Lamp 36V 0.1A

Resistor and Lamp wire in parallel

36V / 30ohm = 1.2A + 0.1A lamp = 1.3A
10Ah battery should last about 7.7 hours with 1.3A load

Will also connect an Ammeter in series and a Voltmeter in parallel with the battery and take the data.

Is this a good way to test Lithium Batteries?

Figured out how to up-load pictures to endless-sphere.com/forums! See drawings of parts.
