48v geared motor

Hi, I have a question about the below motor.
Is it 500w or 1000w?

If I search the motor model number it is 500. But it also has 1000 on it.
It is on a dirt Devil buggy. I would like to increase the power and am looking at 1200-1500w.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

The motor rating isn't just the maximum power it should survive.

And there is no certainty that the label shown lists the maximum power the motor should sustain, or avoid, or whatever. There is no enforced standard.

But labeling the power rating as 'Maximum' does suggest someone is saying this motor has 'Maximum output' of 1000w. That might be shaft horsepower, or it might be maximum sustained electric power before the motor is damaged, etc.

Most '250w' motors will sustain 1000w+ electric power on steep hills or other loads - but only for a short time. The somewhat standard legal rating of these motors for bicycle use means something like "if the motor is sustaining more then 250w for more than 5 minutes, it's rated higher than 250w". But if the motor can sustain power of 250w for longer than 5 minutes, but fails after 5 minutes of more than 250w, then it's legally rated at '250w'. The different laws specify different ways to measure whether a motor meets it's rating or not - some laws don't even specify how to check.

The most common legal rating of motor power is - "what can it sustain without burning out?". My 250w (or 350w) rated ShengYi SX2 routinely displayed 1000w+ on 12 degree hills, but the motor temperature was rising, and something would melt if I kept that up for very long.

So, who wrote that label, what did they intend for this value to mean, is it guaranteed, is it a reference to a legal standard? Can't tell by that label alone. From what you write, I'd infer this is intended to be a '500w' motor (which would mean it can pass 500w of power all day without burning out), and is expected to handle 1000w of power for short periods - but by what definition of 'short', we don't know. By what standard of precison, etc., who knows?

And, yes, electric motors are like that.

I am looking at getting this motor.
Its the amps that make me think it will have more power.
My original motor is only 13.5amp.
This is 36amp.

What is your take on basing the output off the amps??

If you just replace the motor but keep the existing controller, the power will stay the same. To get more power you need to upgrade the controller (more amps).
You could try this with the existing motor and see if it overheats. It might possibly be ok. If it overheats or burns out, then a bigger motor would be needed.

I don't have one now. But...

@fechter 's idea above seems to me a good avenue for you to pursue.

As well, I would also try to fit the motor parameters into the on-line Grin simulator and then pose questions with that tool, to get some idea about how the changes affect the results.

I DO NOT KNOW THAT THIS MOTOR WORKS WITH THE GRIN CONTROLLERS or any other particular controller - I have not delved into the design of this motor. But, I would start with the Grin stock controllers and perhaps a 'Custom Controller' entry populated with the motor parameters as a quick way to get encouragement or useful questions to help me on my way.
 
I'd guess it's 500 maximum continuous watts, 1000w peak.

Take it up a big hill at full throttle. Does it get warm to the touch or really hot?
If it's barely warm then there is room to push more power.
Once it becomes too hot to leave your hand on for 5 minutes, that's too much power.

You will need a programmable controller to find out what this line is between extracting good power and overheating.
Use your most challenging course as your testing grounds.

900RPM is lower than the speed of a geared hub motor, so a typical ebike hub motor controller should work - unless this motor has a ton of poles.

Additional voltage ( 52v nominal ) plus a little more peak amperage and you'd probably be having a good time on this thing :)

But beat on it in stock form to see how much headroom you have first.

Additionally, you probably need a bigger battery to provide the power required for a bigger controller / motor.

Otherwise, your battery may simply shutdown when the higher current is demanded of it, or it may have so much voltage sag that it keeps you from getting the extra power you need, or it may even damage the battery if it has no overcurrent protection.

Thank you for all the help and advice. It's a bit of an investment but I want my son to enjoy it.

I will see if I can get the 1500w motor and controller as I think the amps on my current motor show it isn't 1000w. But I think I will go big or go home.

Ok I didn't get far.

The motor I'm buying looks to only has 3 phase wires and two smaller gauge wires. (I have asked for the wiring diagram)

Can I buy one with all the fruit (Hall sensor, learning wire, speed limit) and just connect what needs to be connected?
