50 amp BBS-HD at Luna

Luna is a fantastic company that has put in a LOT of work to get where they are. I can understand the hesitancy to sell a controller mod for nothing other than the liability aspect. Might create some sales but also a lot of headaches and problems.

I too had good experience with Luna (Although my BBSHD came from somewhere else, closer to my location/in my country, I did buy some spare parts from Luna).

But since I cannot buy the 50A controller from Luna, I'm embrassing the possibility of doing the shunt mod myself. Same stuff as the Luna Ludacriss, I just wont have the fancy cover they provide. So what ? I want the controller for it's internal, not it's aesthetics. Buying a current sense shunt resistor is around 2 dollars... and with usual 30A controller, a soldering iron, a steady, carfull and patient hand and some elbow grease, I believe I can acheive the same result as Luna with the Ludacriss controller. It's no rocket science, just a basic shunt mod.

I'm basically asking, from people who did experiment running higher than usual amperage throught the BBSHD controller... Did you encounter reliablility issues ?
Of course more power = more potential failures.
But there must be a sweet spot. And judging by the motor's massive apparence and what other people say, 1500W is not a lot to put through the BBSHD. It can probably take 2500W with no problem. It probably should be rated 2500W NOMINAL INPUT POWER.
AlanB at ERT ran the BBSHD at 84V and 50A (That's right, 4200W), but with an external controller (Yey! but no PAS, no bafang screen and a bulky unstealthy controller that defeats the purpose of the bafang integrated system).

I've already bought one spare nylon gear, but as it is now, with the original 30A controller, I don't think that I'm ever going to need to use it...
There's some of us who are more open to experimentation ("scientifics"), and who can take it upon themselve if they fry their motor/controller by pushing their limits. Others (the "consumers") expect a 100% reliable product and lifetime warranties. I'm part of the first group... the experimenting kind. But even for us, that 50A controller Luna made is just not acessible. It seem it's reserved for the elite who can buy a bike for 3.5 grands in a wink but can't even mount the BBSHD themselve or change a part... Kinda paradoxal to reserve a product that will wear out quicker or even break to clientele that dont seem to be DIYers and want to buy a bike that's already all preassembled.

I have a luna controller. 60amp
I have rode the tangent (to loud)
I have the cyclone 3000 with a lyen controller CA (super fun with my rohloff)
I have beat my v10 hard for 2 hrs in a enduro race
At 60 amps the chain was toast (v10 has very harsh chain growth) but the hd ran great. And has continued to handle me jerking the throttle everywhere. (Wheelie time)
I keep two bikes running incase something breaks but i have had no problems from eather kit

Cyclone urban riding faster louder.
Bbshd for off road use quieter lighter.

Thanks luna for all your help...
Sorry wrote this from my cellphone.

Good things come to those who wait .... we have had a 50 amp controller for 6 months and still did not release it.... its complex on how you sale something like that to public...but i can say the bbshd at 50 amps is very reliable.

We are going to race an Audi r8 this weekend against our 300 pound test rider on 50 amp BBSHD.....

Live video feed ;)

I'm still waiting to see this...
