Hi Everyone,

This is my very first posting, so go easy on me. I need a small sized battery for a 8Fun Mid drive 36v 250w mid drive. This is what I'm thinking and I need a small size for a good reason..

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/390982384713?_trksid=p2060778.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

So, can I get this battery from a store in Europe or the UK?

Now for the reason for the small size, I'm building an electric bike using a 1950s Schwinn Panther and I want the battery to go into the fake tank area. I've already bought a Panther tank. The bike will end up looking like a Sportsman Flyer, but electric.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, really appriciated.

Chris

Images of the bike, not to totally up-to-date, but good enough.

Could you not make use of a bottle battery? More like £200 delivered, and you could consider one with sinewave controller built-in. They are about 9cm externally. Also seatpost batteries of the alloy drop in type are similar width and height to that one. Also about £200

That could well be a custom pack from a single supplier. Not a mass produced thing.

Thanks for replying. Could you send me a link to your suggestion? I've seen bottle batteries that around 34cm long, but that would be too long for my bike.

Thanks,

Chris

I'm assuming this doesn't have a BMS?..

Yes, that will have a bms. All proper packs use them.

I can't suggest a particular bottle battery. I don't know how much space you have. You would have to decide.

Thanks friendly1uk. Sounds like you don't trust them after your experience. Would they have made this battery themselves? If not, maybe someone will sell this battery in the uk.

If you are handy with batteries, Bosch has a 36V 4/5 amp batteries on UK Ebay for 125 UK pounds. You can place 2 together for a 36V 8-10 A battery. I have been using Bosch batteries for years and they are excellent.

Hi Bionx,

Thanks for the heads-up. So I could daisy chain these together?I assume I'd need to do some DIY myself? Cables etc.?

Chris

Hi Yes you can daisy chain them together. I opened the outer case to make the case smaller. The Bosch packs are 4 or 5 amps each. You need to keep the slide in part of the battery to use with the Bosch charger. If you slide in the battery charge part of the battery into the factory charger. Then you need only to run the output to the battery. The Bosch battery is a Limn so there is no BMS, so you can also charge with a 36V lithium charger (max 42V).

HI there I build Perfectly matched Ebike batteries using 18650 cells.

My process involves the testing of every cell for capacity and internal resistance and then the use of a cell matching program to arrange them so each bank has extremely close capacity and internal resistance.

This eliminates the need for a BMS.

All my own packs are built like this and every time I check balance the cell banks are all the same voltage.

Regardless though I always put balance connectors on my packs and normally split them into two modules that can be Balance charged more easily.

For example my 10s packs are split into two 5s modules with a 5s JST connector so something as cheap as the accucel 6 can be used to balance charge them.

No amount of careful cell selection can negate the need for a BMS. They might all test similarly now, but you can't guarantee them staying that way. It's like vehicle testing. Only applicable on the day it's done. Besides which, no amount of testing will find the one's with built in LVC or other protection mechanisms a BMS may offer.

As you're in the UK you could go along to a B&Q where they are selling off MacAllister 36V 4Ah batteries plus chargers for the grand sum of £34. Apparently the whole MacAllister 36V system is being discontinued so they are selling off the batteries (they were £130). They are only available in store though, not available to reserve online. It's discussed in this thread on the UK Pedelecs forum.

What battery did you decide to go with Chris?
