A123 20ah Cells on eBay

Joining the forum two or three days ago and the first post he makes on ES is to direct us to ebay cells. Hmm.... Me thinks he's the one selling those cells and came here to advertise. Just a thought, might be wrong.

don't think so. he seems to be german, and the auction is israel based, and chinese language translation. but who knows ...
edit: looked into other auctions of this seller - which IS in china, and product name of 18650 cell says: "Model NO. OSN-18650-1.2AH" - do we need to say more? ;)

they are crap
left over grey market cells from china
you may get a fair batch or a horrible ones regardless it will be a reject/ real a123 prismatic cells dont come that cheap
if you get a usable batch good for you- @ least ebay has buyer protection
the buyer probably either got them from vict/ osn/ alibaba but these re-sellers get them out of dumpsters

okay i thought someting like this, but want to hear your opinion.
does anybody know a good source for cells under 30$

ps: i'm not the seller of the auction

For me self only 22 cells. I saw your offer, so you bought them from OSN Power ? Did you have any trouble ?

just for info: i can really recommend those cell - if they are good, and no fake.
i just tried a short test ride with 24s1p 20c 5000mah lipo, and they did sag sooo badly. i know 45a is a lot to ask from those cells, but still they should easily deliver it. cells where quite hot after the short ride.
something i NEVER saw with those a123 cells. almost no voltage sag, no heat, nothing!

I bought from osn a few times, maybe around 200 pcs total. These proved to be good ones, compared to any other supplier.
However that was ~18 months ago. Everyone is short o A123s now and I woudn't count on them still selling good product.

I only have 12 pcs.. I also have some (8 or so) from victpower, but those are not worth mixing with these.

Will there be a restock on A123 cells on the market ?
I think it would be better to wait for a re-production, instead of buying cells on which you can't count.

I hope that's not the case. I bought a 12s1p A123 20ah battery from OSN and it's been working flawlessly so far. I suppose only time will tell whether I got good ones or not.

Yes, my sentiments exactly. A123 under the Wanxiang Group will be a new company. My hope is that they will make a set of batteries engineered for our use.

noone knows that. we are just HOPING that there will be new batteries. i mean there will be batteries, but we don't know if they will be available to public.

Well....I don't know how long it's been since anyone here has approached A123 about buying cells directly. It's a new day at A123. There were very strong (I won't say good) reasons that the company simply COULD NOT source cells to this (the DIY/hobbyist) community when they were trying to grow into a giant overnight. We were struggling to make enough cells for our OEM's; the resources just weren't there. Our new leadership (despite containing some of the same key players) is not so allergic to slower growth and the summing together of smaller revenue streams. I don't speak for A123 here, certainly not for sales, but I see an opening here. If loads of guys keep hitting the company up for "factory seconds"--which, based on the reported capacity I'm seeing around for the "grey market" cells is exactly what everybody here is working with even when the cells are described as "top quality"--to build bike packs and lawn mower packs etc., they might actually entertain the idea recovering cells not suited for the automotive market--but still damn good--for secondary uses. There are a few parties out there working to get repurposing of automotive cells off the ground, and this market is ideal, IMO. I'll talk to a guy I know today who has a boat load of used Li cells and see if he's interested in dealing with this community.

+1 indeed lets hope a123 opens the gate to us all- just like any other chinese vendor - however this better not be another group buy scam attempt- if we buy we buy direct from a123 not from some guy who has a boat and goes missing after the paypal orders have been made.

I already mentioned this in another thread, but got no reply. I know a guy in MI who has a large cache of used 26650 cells. Condition ranges from toast to like new, so sorting is needed. His electronics repair business is in Holland MI, and he has been around for many years--he's not going anywhere. He also has a large inventory of unused 26650 modules left over from old Hymotion packs (plug-in conversion module for the Gen II Prius). Also has BMS's and other parts from the Hymotion line available.

He's hesitant to get into selling the used cells to individuals, primarily because it would mean a lot of up-front work on his part with sorting (I would recommend sorting first by capacity, secondly by cell impedance). However, he may be interested in a group buy if he can get rid of a lot of cells in a single transaction. Details would have to be worked out, but I'm willing to help. He does have the means to sort cells, but of course price would be affected. Even if the used cells are not of interest, the Hymotion modules should be of interest to several here, I would think. 26650's in 8S11P for ~26V/25Ah per module.

If anyone expresses interest, I can help grease the wheels. I have no money at stake here...this is just me helping out a partner in our biz who has stood up and taken his knocks like the rest of us in this field--the kind of guy we all want to see succeed. Any interest?

the market is full of 26650 cells
they are of high quality however - building a pack out of them takes time.....
now- legitimate prismatic 20ah a123 cells- individual or from a used source like a module would be useful

Can't help with pouch cells at the moment, but maybe in the future.....

It does take a lot of time. The more I do it the faster I get. :)

Using the rugged A123 26650 cells can make the task of building a pack that will last a long time easier.

Building a homemade pack out of recycled cells for your ebike is ebike geekness supreme. :)

on top of time
good luck finding the needle in the hay stack when a single cell in the configuration goes bad
even though the single cells are manufactured with higher QA standards than the large format cells- it can still happen
