About Cyclone VS GNG Gen 1&2

go to Cyclone,taiwan...buy direct and save money and get a wide choic.e of motors and parts...... i run a cyclone 1650w through a nuvinci 360 with a lipo 441/2v,20 amp battery and a Lyen 48v,40 amp controller ...works fine,no problems

Be aware that if you run the cyclone kit at 36V the stock 44t chainrings that come with the kits are geared too low so your legs have to pedal too fast to keep up with the motor - see previous posts from boostjuice and others. Cyclone do offer a 48t chainring upgrade (email paco at cyclone to negotiate a price for getting this instead of the 44t in your kit). Alternatively you can buy your own chainring and crank freewheel. look at sickbikeparts.com for their heavy duty freewheel (will last much longer than cyclones) and chainring spider then you buy your own chainrings seperately. I use a 53t @ 36v with the motor and that is good for pedalling although some people may go as high as 60t.

for a 48V battery you obviously need even bigger chainrings.

A little titbit of info I was related the other day.

The cyclone motors with internal reduction gearing, was developed by an Aussie inventor who's product was the elation bike.
He won "New Inventors" here I believe.
Anyway, he got his prototype made up in china, tested and approved them, then his fixer farmed the work out to other manufacturers and the end product was horrible and unreliable, that almost sent him broke. What then broke him completely (and he's now out of business and has lost his life savings) was that the company who he contracted to make the motors.... signed an exclusive supply deal with another purchaser and he then had to buy HIS motor from this retailer. That retailer.... Cyclone.

His original product was award winning and a good strong reliable design. The current product is made from inferior quality components, but still a reasonable product due to the design.

I got that from the WA (that's Western Australia) distributor, they had finally completed holding onto spares to cater for the 12month warranty on the last of the elation bikes sold and were able to sell them off cheap. I picked up a couple of batteries cheap.

From what I know, having first seen it on the "New Inventors" and hence buying two of them about 4-5 years ago, is that the V2 uses the Cyclone type (Headline) motor. Both kits are still in use.

The later V3 used a different type of motor also with gearing. This seems to be unique.

I run my Cyclone @ 48V and yes it IS noisy, She whines and I am conscious about it when I'm on the trails. I'm looking at the oil filled gearbox option as well as the GNG option and available engine mounts are pretty average for off road use - I'd recommend making your own.
I want Hub motor quiet with mid drive performance. The only thing that has really let me down with the Cyclone has been Motor Freewheel, I brought an ACS which lasted twice as long as the Dicta then finally brought a White Industries Eno but now have to machine/Modify an adaptor to fit the 16t freewheel and 20mm headline output shaft.I run the standard alu cooling fins which work well, just round them off or you'll leave blood from your leg all over them.
I certainly recommend the 148mm ISIS cranks - Don't even bother with the other junk that comes with the kit, mine couldn't/wouldn't run straight and the chainring wobbled a good 5mm and only had one bearing on each end of the bottom bracket axle. Also the half twist throttle gave me tendon pain trying to hang on with 2 fingers so I threw that out and brought the thumb throttle to go with my Kelly controller.

Thedocopter the other high power kits out their are also noisy it seems, low power everything is quiet. But high power on a mid drive makes it noisier

Thedocopter. 'I want Hub motor quiet with mid drive performance.'

Even a quiet hub motor, will not be as quiet when used as a mid drive because it can run at both higher RPM and also more load then in the wheel, both of these things cause more noise then when it was a hub motor.

Waynebergan noticed this with his mac conversion here:

by waynebergman » Tue Jul 09, 2013 12:23 am No I am sorry no video as of yet. It is for sure more noisy than a stock mac used as it is intended as a hub for the wheel.

Also Christerjungs, GNG motor was originally quiet but after the chain drive conversion and 100v it very noisy like an RC motor

the Stock GNG is quite silent but the combinaison of 100v and #25 chain mod makes it sound like most RC drives.

If you go with gng, are you going with lightening rod upgrades? I don't have one but It seems other than motor, stuff breaks easy? Not sure if that was mentioned above. I have the aft cyclone and is really strong.
