I have done many e-bikes/e-mopeds/e-motorcycles and currently have downsized to just having one electric “drag bike”… I love hubmotors, but motorcycles are only useful for getting around from point A to point B and I feel like there is much cooler stuff that can be done with them. 20 years ago I started building fighting robots then got lost in the sauce with the EV wave. But i can’t find anyone really taking advantage of the insane power these hubmotors can put out in robotics applications. There’s robots like handle from Boston dynamics, and that is my entire inspiration for this project. What if it was much more powerful and could go many times faster? Oh ya… and fully autonomous
What I’m working with at the moment…
-nvidia Orin AGX
-waiting on a pair of qs273 40h v3 4kw single axle motors to ship out, should be any day now
-pair of makers PEV mini FOCers
-tons of lithium batteries
-a nearly unlimited amount of carbon fiber and the scrap yard sells aluminum $1/lb so I have stocked up on lots of 1/2” and 1/4” plate, 2” round tubing etc all 6061-t6
-some large wheelchair motors for the leg joints
Originally I wanted to have the option to get inside like a mech suit but that just introduces way too many issues at least for the initial build. And I know what people are thinking, the idea of having a large overpowered robot that can hurt someone accidentally is irresponsible and yada yada. That’s fine, it won’t be operating around anyone but me and the few people I get to help me build it. Wait until the Tesla robots get hacked and do crazy stuff. At least this isn’t something trying to run around pretending it’s not a threat, a 400lb+ robot that will probably be 7 feet tall isn’t going to try to gain anyone’s trust lol.
That said, if anyone wants to follow, I’ll make a build log. If this is in the wrong part of the forum, feel free to move it. The application of this robot has a lot of potential. It’s not exactly an electric vehicle but the end goal is to make it into one. If I had the money to gamble, it would be running the single axle version of the 12kw hubmotors… but I’m starting small.
