I have one of the "NEW" crystalyte controllers that doesn't even offer a reverse. I am sure there many people out there with other earlier controllers that didn't order the reverse option because they weren't thinking about it at the time...

QUESTION: Can you ADD a phsudo reverse switch by REVERSING the 1st and 3rd Hall Effect leads? (or any two leads, three leads?)

Has anyone tried it ?

This could be done at the controller level.. even if the housing does not have a reverse key thingamabob.. the controller board likely has not changed.

Fechter or the like would be able to help on this i think.. but i'd mod the controller instead of adding relays and the like to the motor ..

yes exchcanging the 1st and 3rd hall sensor lead will reverse a normal motor/controller combo.

the old Crystalyte controllers (20A and 40A) both had a jumper spot on the board to reverse the controller. for those all you had to do is wire a switch there.

I'm not sure, but I think you'd need to reverse two phase wires as well as two halls (A and C) to reverse it.

There's a good chance the newer controller has a reverse function built into the chip, but it's just permanently connected. There might be one leg on the main chip that could be cut and jumpered for reverse.

This would be much better than switching the hall and phase wires if it can be done.

Hi Guys,

I think I've got your answer for you. I have just bought one of the new 72V 40A Crystalyte Controllers from Justin at ebikes.ca.

I am putting together a 406 hub for a three wheeled Aerorider and I really need reverse....

This is Justin's response about how to add reverse to this new controller:

Sounds like an easy mod. I have not yet found the time to even open up the controller to look at the board for the DSP pad, so I've got no pictures for you all, but I'll certainly drop a post if I get more experience with this mod!

Best Regards,

Brian

Excellent! That's what I was thinking of. Justin conveniently provided us with the exact location of the pin and confirmed that it would work. That saves a lot of messing around.

The pad can be grounded through a switch and long wires so the switch is easy to reach.

Don't make it too easy though, I think the controller will self-destruct if you accidently hit that switch while the motor is running.

i know that the best way to do this is internally on the controller but just incase it isn't a crystalyte motor controller that needs reversing.

I had occasion to check a couple of motors and controllers in the last couple of days and after some playing around i confirmed the following:

- to reverse a pedal first motor just swap the blue and yellow wires of the motor.

- to reverse a instant star motor you have to swap the blue and yellow hall wires as well as the blue and yellow phase wires of the motor.

Thanks for confirming this. I just never tried it.
