Just looking at the conversions to take the vacuum assist out and put the electric assist in your steering. I notice they run as high as $1,500. Some of these are for race cars, (The purpose being to save weight) so I assume they must work well.

So has anyone who has converted a car switched over to electric steering assist?

I don't remember specific builds, but there were several over at DIY Electric Car forums, back when I was over there a lot (several years ago). I think they were using parts from BMWs?

I used to drive a 32 ton Seddon Atkinson Borderer with manual steering and it had 2 dents in the floor where you put your feet when you were stood up turning the wheel at slow speed.
Power steering in a car is for wimps

They use Toyota and other brands of electric power steering pumps. Some are VERY noisy. As AW stated, do a google on diyelectriccar.com.
