Anyone know a good vet in Winnipeg or do they all need to be strung up by their thumbs for price fixing and immoral business practices? I have a friend being raked over the coals by an unscrupulous veterinarian up there. Almost $600 for 2 Xrays plus medicine to relax a puppy, and he insisted on being paid up front before giving any info or diagnosis. On top of that his diagnosis was "I don't know, come back Saturday." Saturday he offered an operation for thousands or amputate the leg for over $900. My friend finally got the Xrays he paid a fortune for, and sent them to an orthopedic vet, who said he'd need to examine the puppy to be sure, but based on the Xrays and age that it probably only needs to be tapped up for a few weeks and an operation could lead to problems down the road. Also, if an operation to put a screw and or wire to fix the fracture is required, it would be under $500.

I don't know what passes for service or business ethics in Canada, but the guy was very lucky it wasn't me and my dog seeing him.

Unfortunatly, it seems most vets today are playing DOCTOR.

Here in the states the vets have gone nuts.

The same vet location has insane prices. Luckily I fond the original Vet we had before she moved on. She left just foe that raeson, Ripping off animal lovers. It's a longer drive but wrth it.

It went from bad to worse. He tried to get possession of the dog to force the expensive surgery, was very uncooperative regarding a 2nd opinion, and he refuses to sell my friend the anti-inflamatory medicine that he recommended and the dog actually does need. We had to send her the medicine from down here.

All I have to say is good thing it wasn't me, because I would have gone ballistic. The larcenous pricing is only a small part of the issue...it's the unethical and immoral treatment that bugs me. The guy insisted on unnecessary surgery with only 2 choices, amputate for almost $1k, or several $k for a screw and wire. The 2nd and 3rd (the 3rd was an orthopedic specialist) opinions using the xrays strongly recommended no surgery now at all, because it guaranteed pain and future problems, and the proper treatment is to just keep the dog calm for the next few weeks. If she's not 100% when they bring her down in June, then they'll consider surgery when the bones are better developed.

Nothing is good in Winnipeg.

If you like cold, I'm sure there's plenty of that. I looked on the map and it's about 250 miles due north of Fargo, ND, so yeah, plenty of cold, and more to come with the sun moving out of its active faze of cyclic activity.

John, not only is Winnipeg cold, it is also our country's capital for theft. My brother's truck got stolen, wheels removed, then it went to the impound during the investigation. The same guys broke into the impound and stole it again.

Come on , its not that bad, was actually above zero today!!!

John , I can ask my friend if he has a favorite vet. yes it seems like vets are going a little crazy of late. I think the drug companies got to them . just like everyone else.

That would be great, because the treatment from this guy has been unconscionable. If you're in their shop's delivery area, I'm sure I can get you fixed up with pizza discounts. I don't know the name, but the phone# is all 2's.

I have it on good athority that the oak bank vet is good. Oak bank is on the west perimeter of the city. I would say in general any vert from a small town around here is far above what you will find in the city. Hope it works out!
