I am so new to ebikes. I want to know if I can upgrade the battery to a 48V with a 500W motor or do I have to upgrade the controller too?

Decent chance it will work. Most 36V controllers are made with components that can handle 48V as well. Sometimes the label on the controller may provide some clues. The other consideration is that some ebikes use proprietary components, so if the stock battery "communicates" with the controller, that might cause a compatibility issue that isn't voltage related.
