I know internal gear hubs are very easy to use anyway, but as a thought experiment, would it be plausible to use one of the automatic hubs (Like the SRAM Automatix or the Shimano Auto 3) as a final stage in transmission? I think running a small 24 volt motor through one of these should not cause too much harm.
The Automatix is purely mechanical and has two speeds (1:1 and 1:1.37) and the Auto 3 has a little electric motor and computer (Driven by a hub dynamo, but that's a moot point on an electric bike) and appears to be an add-on to a standard Shimano hub, but I'm not sure.
The Automatix is a pretty affordable unit, when compared to a SA 3 speed hub, and I feel tempted to get one for one of my normal bikes. They are designed to shift at around 12 MPH on a 26" wheel, but apparently they can be adjusted

Yeah you just need to mount the motor through the center of the bike to the other side and get one of ggoodrums 3 speed dealys.

The currie motor already has reduction so you don't need the huge sprocket in back.. Should work great until the brushed motor gives out!
Wineboyrider pointed me towards these adapters some time ago, and judging from pictures of the Automatix, (and what I remember from the site, which doesn't seem to be up anymore), this adapter ought to work on the Automatix. I think I'll PM ggoodrums about this adaptor with my questions, if it's still available, will it work, etc.
Perhaps this idea isn't so unfeasible after all :D
