A student who was mugged on her birthday has spoken out to warn other cyclists after her rucksack was snatched from her bicycle basket by moped thieves while she rode through west London.
May Bulman, who is studying for an MA in Journalism at City University, was riding down Kensington High Street at 11.30am on Saturday when the two men struck.
The 23-year-old, who lives in Kensington’s Avonmore Road, said the experience was even more distressing because the moped riders struck on her birthday.
She told the Standard: “I was riding down Kensington High Street and I had my rucksack in my bike basket.
“There was this moped with two guys on it – it had been in front of me and veered left but then turned back into the road after.
“I had kind of noticed the motorbike because the guy on the back wasn’t sitting on it properly – it was a weird way of riding.
“Then they came next to me and grabbed my bag out of my basket and drove off.
“It had my phone in it, my purse, a new top that I’d just bought from Zara, a birthday card with a Topshop voucher in it from my grandma, the bag was new too; it was rubbish.”
Miss Bulman said the experience has left her more vigilant, but has caused her to “lose her trust” in people.
She said: “I was shocked, I’d heard of it happening, but on a street like Kensington High Street you don’t expect that kind of thing to happen, especially when there are lots of people around.
“I couldn’t believe they just took it and rode off, I thought it was a joke.
“I kept riding for a bit and shouted something at them, but I was never going to catch them. There was nothing I could do about it.
“I sat down on the pavement and started crying, I couldn’t really believe it.
“It was horrible, but I’m glad I wasn’t injured.

After hitting the bicyclist, the driver then careened into several parked cars before coming to a stop, Lewis said.
The motorist stayed at the scene and investigators determined the driver was not impaired, Lewis said.
"We were able to determine that there was no crime involved," Lewis said. "It was just a tragic accident."
Woodman Avenue between Strathern and Willard streets were expected to remain closed until about 10 a.m. during the investigation.
Drivers were asked to avoid the area.

Investigators want to speak to the driver of a pickup truck spotted tailgating a bicycle moments before the cyclist went down and suffered fatal injuries.
The incident happened around 9:45 a.m. Wednesday in Palos Verdes Estates, on a downhill stretch of Granvia Altamira. At this point, it's not clear whether the vehicles collided, said Palos Verdes Estates Det. Sgt. Luke Hellinga.
The cyclist was transported to Harbor UCLA Medical Center with serious head trauma, despite a helmet where he died of his injuries. The 69-year-old man has been identified, but authorities are withholding his name until members of his extended family have been notified.
Investigators located home security camera video showing a Ford F150 pickup truck closing in on the cyclist passing in front of the house, then going out of sight. The cyclist was found on the ground near the curb 150 feet down the road.
The 9-1-1 call came from a group of cyclists farther down the hill. The driver of a white pickup told them a cyclist was injured, neighbor Joe Krock said he learned from the group. The pickup drove off before authorities arrived.
The driver was described as a heavyset man, about six feet tall and wearing a blue shirt. "It is believed the driver and/or occupants may have inforamtion about the collission," according to a statement issued by the police department
in seeking public assistance.
Hilly terrain and stunning views make Palos Verdes a favorite among road cyclists, but occasionally there is friction with motorists.
Two weeks ago on Granvia Altamira, the driver of a white pickup pulled alongside three cyclists riding uphill, and shouted at them, recalled Carey Alpert, one of the riders. Alpert said they were riding single file, but the driver was apparently angry they were taking road space. Whether it was the same white pickup seen Wednesday is unknown.
An electronic signboard now in place on Granvia Altamira implores any witnesses to contact the Palos Verdes Estates Police Department at 310-378-4211
Only two months ago, another cyclist was killed while descending Hawthorne Blvd. Rounding a bend, Pissanuk Jonathan Tansavatdi, 29, of Redonod Beach,
was not able to stop in time to avoid a big rig moving truck making a right turn.

Detectives in Palos Verdes Estates are trying to find witnesses to a possible hit-and-run crash that resulted in the death of a bicyclist on Wednesday.
Specifically, they want to talk to the driver of a white truck seen on security video tailing the bicyclist before the rider was found injured on the ground.
Investigators declined Thursday to definitively say the truck struck the bicyclist.
“We are looking to talk to any of the occupants of the white truck to help us make that determination,” Palos Verdes Estates police Sgt. Luke Hellinga said.
The white truck, identified as a late 1990s to early 2000s model Ford F-150, was captured on video by a security camera in the area. Investigators released the picture to the public Thursday.
An occupant of that truck stopped after the bicyclist went down in the 1100 block of Granvia Altamira about 9:45 a.m. Wednesday. The man flagged down other people, asking for someone to call 9-1-1, Hellinga said.
Once he was successful, he got back into his truck and drove away, Hellinga said. The man was described as white, 6 feet tall, heavyset and wearing a blue shirt.
The bicyclist, a man in his 60s whose name was not released, was unconscious and appeared to have a head injury, police said. He was taken to County Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where he died.
Police believe the bicyclist had been riding north on Granvia Altamira when a collision occurred.
“Detectives would like to speak to anyone who might have seen the events leading up to and including the collision,” police said.
The white truck might have damage, Hellinga said.
Anyone with information was asked to call Hellinga at 310-378-4211.

(FOX 11) - Detectives in Palos Verdes Estates are trying to find witnesses to a possible hit-and-run crash that resulted in the death of a bicyclist on Wednesday.
On Wednesday, May 18, 2016, at about 9:45 a.m., the Palos Verdes Estates Police Department responded to the 1100 block of Granvia Altamira regarding an injury traffic collision involving a bicyclist. Officers arrived and located an injured bicyclist lying on the roadway.
Near him was a men's dark colored specialized road bike. The bicyclist, a male in his late 60's, was unconscious and appeared to have a head injury. Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics responded to treat the injured bicyclist.
He was transported to Harbor UCLA Medical Center in critical condition. Although the bicyclist was wearing a helmet, he later succumbed to his injuries. Based on the preliminary investigation, it appears the bicyclist was riding northbound on Granvia Altamira when the collision occurred. It is unknown if another vehicle was involved in the collision; however, a white, late 1990's-early 2000's, Ford F150, four-door, pick-up was seen travelling behind the bicyclist prior to the area where the collision occurred. It is believed that the driver and/or occupants of this vehicle may have information about the collision. The driver was described as a heavyset, White, male adult, 6' tall , wearing a blue shirt.

A 25-year-old Rancho Murieta man faces arraignment Thursday on charges that he attacked a bicyclist in Murieta North, using his truck to try to run the 50-year-old victim off the road before punching him in the face.
Tyler Immer is charged with assault with a deadly weapon and battery causing serious bodily injury in connection with the April 22 incident, which occurred at lunchtime on Murieta Parkway across from the Rancho Murieta Association Building.
Sheriff’s Sgt. Tony Turnbull said Immer and the bicyclist exchanged words outside the Country Store. The bicyclist told police he was told to “Go back to the hood.” Immer is white; the victim, whose identity is being withheld, is black.
“After the argument,” Turnbull wrote in an email, “the suspect located the victim inside the gate of Rancho Murieta and used his vehicle to run the victim off the road.  The victim fell off his bike while evading the suspect vehicle, causing injury.  The suspect then exited the truck and punched the victim in the face.”
The victim suffered a knee injury, requiring surgery, and a swollen eye, his family said.
Rancho Murieta Security said the victim, who lives in Sacramento, was visiting his mother in Rancho Murieta at the time. There was a witness and video footage from the North Gate, according to Chief Greg Remson.
Immer, arrested and charged May 12, is free on $25,000 bail, Turnbull said.

The size of cycle fines is not the only thing to have surged in NSW in the past two months.
So too have the number of infringement notices issued as police crack down especially hard on cyclists who do not wear approved helmets.
The latest statistics show a 56 per cent rise to 1545 in the total number of fines issued in the two months after the Baird government ushered in stiffer penalties for cyclists on March 1, compared with the same period a year earlier.

Cyclists fined for not wearing helmets rose to 1098 in March and April – up from 710 previously. They make up more than two-thirds of the total number of infringement notices.
The fine for riding without a helmet more than quadrupled on March 1 to $319.
It means the amount of fines collected from people riding without helmets totalled $350,262 in March and April, compared with just over $50,000 in the same period in 2015.
In contrast to the number of cyclists penalised, four motorists were fined for not passing cyclists at a safe distance during the period.
As part of the tougher measures, motorists who pass a cyclist must allow a distance of at least one metre when the speed limit is 60 kilometres an hour or less, and 1.5 metres when the limit is more than 60km/h.
The figures from NSW Police show the number of people nabbed for cycling on footpaths rose to 166 in March and April, up from 101 previously. Fines issued for riding without a "working warning device" more than doubled to 60.
Twelve cyclists were also penalised for running red lights, compared with none in the same period last year. The fine for failing to stop at a red light increased from $71 to $425 on March 1.

Bicycle NSW chief executive Ray Rice said he was disappointed that only a few motorists had been fined for driving too close to cyclists.
"We agree that education is the best method but it has to be backed up by a reasonable level of compliance, which is fining people," he said.
"[The number of motorists fined] does seem very low in proportion to the number of cycling fines issued in the same period."
Mr Rice said he was not surprised at the increase in fines because feedback from cyclists had suggested that compliance monitoring had risen in the wake of the government's changes.

Roads Minister Duncan Gay said he had been given no choice but to impose tougher deterrents given the high number of cycling injuries in NSW.
"We don't want cyclists' money – that is not why we increased fines for high-risk and downright stupid behaviour. These changes are about improving safety," he said.
"I don't want to see another dollar in fine revenue but I do hope to see a reduction in cyclist injuries. It is simple: if you wear a helmet, you won't get fined."

However, Greens transport spokeswoman Mehreen Faruqi said the government needed to ask itself whether its punitive approach actually made people safer or would take cyclists off the roads.
"The government justified increasing the fines by up to 450 per cent as a deterrent against what they characterised as unsafe behaviour. But all that's happened is more infringement notices have been issued, as police have gone on blitzes to rake in more revenue," she said.
She said there had not been "any serious strategy" by the government for investing in bike infrastructure.
The stiffer penalties in NSW for cyclists are said to be among the toughest in the world for people who opt for pedal power.
The latest figures also show three people were fined for riding their "bicycle furiously" in March and April, compared with four previously.

Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander John Hartley said police would continue to do whatever was needed to help keep the roads safe for everyone.
"Enforcement will always be necessary to educate road users in NSW. So far this year, one cyclist has died on our roads, compared to two this time last year," he said.
"While one death on the road is one too many, this gives some positive indication that riders and cyclists alike are taking personal responsibility for their road use."

Video: Screaming Driver, Cyclist Nearly Come To Blows On Market Street
by Jack Morse in News on May 26, 2016 1:20 pm
A confrontation caught on tape yesterday morning shows a driver who had been driving in the bike lane on Market Street jumping out of his car and verbally accosting a clearly frightened cyclist as she holds her bike lock in front of her for protection. The incident went down near Franklin Street, and appears to have started when the driver of a silver Toyota stopped in a protected bike lane on the busy street, dropping off a passenger near the intersection of Van Ness and Market.
The cyclist, who was forced to ride around the stopped car, yelled at and may have pounded on the car (the video is unclear) as she rode around. The driver stops at Franklin, gets out of the car, and screams, "You hit my car, bitch!"
Other cyclists try to calm the situation down, and the car's passenger, a woman, gets out to hold the man back as he screams. As the cyclist rides away, the driver spits at her.
This incident comes two weeks after a driver allegedly intentionally drove over a cyclist on Market Street before trying to flee the scene. Thankfully, this time it appears that no one was injured.

OAKLAND -- Ernesto Lora Jr., was a "people-friendly person" who chose jobs in the service industry so he could interact with others.
The 29-year-old Lora was also an avid bicyclist who loved music and played several instruments.
Those are the memories family and friends passed along to police who continue to investigate his fatal shooting April 30 in the 2000 block of Lakeshore Avenue, across from Lake Merritt, as he bicycled home from a party.
Police held a news conference Wednesday seeking the public help in solving the killing of Lora, who came to Oakland late last year from the Houston area of Texas.
So far, only robbery has been ruled out as a motive and police have still not determined why Lora was killed and whether he was deliberately targeted or chosen at random, said homicide Sgt. Michael Cardoza, the lead investigator.
"He was trying to establish himself in Oakland," Cardoza said at a news conference. "He had a few friends in the area but his family is in Texas." Lora had worked locally as a food server at different restaurants and also as a charity fund solicitor.
Lora had left a party at a co-worker's Piedmont home shortly before he was killed and was on the east side of Lakeshore in a bicycle lane when he was shot about 12:41 a.m. April 30. His bicycle was lying near him when police found him. He died a short time later at a hospital.
Cardoza said the party had been a social gathering, with nothing happening that would lead to someone following him. Police believe he rode his bike down Lakeshore from the party.
"I believe something happened between the time he left the party and when he was shot," Cardoza said. "Was it an altercation, road rage, an argument with someone -- we don't know." he said.
He said police have already reviewed video surveillance of Lora's route and canvassed the area seeking clues and now plan to post fliers in the area with Lora's photo and a picture of his bicycle, hoping it will generate new leads.
Cardoza said Lakeshore Avenue is a highly visible, well traveled area and police are convinced someone saw something or might have some video that could solve the case and bring closure to Lora's family and friends.
"I'm taking any bit of information that will further this investigation," Cardoza said.
Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $15,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of the killer. Anyone with information may call police at 510-238-3821 or 510-777-8572.

A bicycling advocate and local Democratic Party leader has been identified as the cyclist who was killed in a wreck south of Napa.
Paul Schapiro, 58, died of injuries suffered in a crash on Highway 29, according to Sgt. Doug Pace of the Napa County Sheriff’s Office.
The crash occurred at 5:38 p.m. Friday on the southbound highway north of Airport Boulevard, and involved Schapiro’s bike and a motor vehicle, Cal Fire reported earlier.
Schapiro was declared dead at the scene. The motorist was not injured, according to Cal Fire. Further details about the crash were not immediately available.
An American Canyon resident, Schapiro gained local prominence in the fields of cycling and Democratic politics. In 2014, his love of two-wheel travel — including a daily 6½-mile commute each way to his accounting job at Perfect Purée in south Napa — earned him the Bicycle Commuter of the Year Award, which the Napa County Bicycle Coalition awarded him at its annual Bike Fest.
“I hate driving. I’m cheap and I like to save money. I care about the environment and I want to stay in shape,” he said at the time, proudly adding that his 2008 Toyota Prius had fewer than 11,000 miles on its odometer.
Schapiro also served as treasurer of the Napa County Democratic Party, and in July 2008 took part in a protest against the U.S.-led war in Iraq in which members of UNCOIL — United Napans Concerned Over the Iraq Lunacy – planted white crosses near highways 29 and 221 to protest a local visit by then-President George W. Bush.

INDIANAPOLIS – Police are trying to figure out if two shootings are connected after bicyclists were shot at different locations early Monday morning.
Hanque Myers, 48, was hospitalized after he was shot in the chest Monday morning on Indianapolis' northeast side.
Police say the shooting happened around 5:20 a.m., on 52nd Place Near Mark Lane, which is about a mile away from Arlington High School.
Police think it may have been random, but it also could be linked another shooting earlier in the morning near 14th Street and Gladstone Avenue where another person on a bike was shot.
Myers says early Monday morning, he grabbed the dog and his bike and headed out for some exercise.
He says the driver of a car stopped and asked him a couple questions and seemed to drive off, but returned again. Then, he heard at least two gunshots ring out, and realized he had been shot.
"Maybe his thought was, 'I'll shoot this guy,' and maybe he was feeling me out," Myers told RTV6. "Then he turned around and he decided to come back and shoot me... I think it was the circumstances presented itself, and whatever was going through his head? I have no idea. I have no idea."
Myers says the bullet ricocheted off a bone, so his injuries actually aren't that bad, despite the fact that he took a bullet to the chest.
Myers was taken to Eskenazi Health and is expected to be OK. Watch our video in the player above for more.

KALAMAZOO COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Newschannel 3 has learned that at least five people have been killed on North Westnedge, near Markin Glen Park, just north of Kalamazoo, after a group of bicyclists were struck from behind by a blue Chevy pickup truck.
It happened around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday evening.
All of those killed were bicyclists riding down the road when a pickup truck came up behind them, and struck the group.
In a press conference late Tuesday night, Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeff Getting reported Tuesday night that the driver is a 50-year-old male, "from West Michigan," and would not elaborate further.
There were at least nine people in all who were struck by the vehicle.

Getting says the truck was disabled as a result of the crash, and the driver of the truck was apprehended a short distance away.
Bronson Hospital has confirmed that two cyclists are being treated there at this hour, but there is no word regarding their condition.
A spokesperson for Borgess Hospital confirmed that there are two people being treated there as well. One is listed in fair condition, and one is listed in critical condition.
We do know that no children were involved in the crash, contrary to other reports.
Police were alerted to a blue pickup truck in the 30 minutes leading up to the accident, and that calls had come in to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, Kalamazoo Township Police Department, and the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office.

Witnesses in the area tell us they saw the group and heard the squealing of tires.
Neighbors who spoke to Newschannel 3 say they heard a loud bang and rushed out of their homes, and soon after heard sirens and saw first responders arriving on the scene.
One man said he saw a fleeing car, and a woman told Newschannel 3 she saw mangled bicycles spread across the road.
"It's not good. I'm glad they got the guy, they caught him from running," one witness said.
Paul Selden, the Director of Road Safety for the Kalamazoo Bicycle Club, offered a statement to Newschannel 3 on Tuesday night:
I know from working closely with area leadership that we are working to make our community even more bicycle friendly. This senseless tragedy--in my memory, the worst of its kind in Kalamazoo County, and possibly in the entire State of Michigan--underscores that we can do much more. Motorists and bicyclists need to share the road safely throughout the year, but especially during peak bicycling season.

Kalamazoo Strong told Newschannel 3 Tuesday night that the group was setting up a crisis fund for victims and family members.

A tourist on Mackinac Island died after losing control of her bicycle and falling under a moving horse-drawn carriage.
It happened Tuesday on Main Street near the Mackinac Public Library on Mackinac Island.
Michigan State Police say Gail Johnson, from Liano, Texas, was riding a bicycle on Main Street when she lost control and fell under a moving horse-drawn carriage.
Troopers say she was taken to the Mackinac Island Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.
They say it is unclear if she suffered a medical incident before the accident.
Mackinac Island's mayor says it is a tragedy, something they never want to see.
“It is very unfortunate incident, we're very, very saddened about it. We take care of all the tourists that visit the island. It's very unfortunate and we are very saddened about it," says Mayor Margaret Doud.
An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday in Grand Rapids.

MACKINAC ISLAND, Mi. (WPBN/WGTU) -- A 79-year-old Texas woman visiting Mackinac Island was killed in a bike accident Tuesday.
It happened on Main Street near the library around 5 p.m.
Mackinac Island Police say Gail Johnson was riding bikes with friends and family, headed to the Grand Hotel to have dinner.
They say she suddenly swerved, lost control of her bike and fell under a moving, horse-drawn carriage.
Emergency services took her to Mackinac Island Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
A preliminary examination suggests Johnson may have suffered a medical incident just prior to the accident.
"They've sent her for an autopsy down in Grand Rapids just to validate that," said Mackinac Island Police Chief Brett Riccinto. "We were told by her best friend, people that were with her, that she's an active bicycle rider and in very good health up until this point."
Family and friends say Johnson was a very experienced cyclist, and they don't know why else she would have lost control.
Johnson was from Llano, Texas.

A cyclist has called on inconsiderate motorists to take more care near riders after he captured several near-misses on camera.
The man, who does not want to be named, now films all of his journeys with a helmet camera after being hit by a reversing car.
He shared two hair-raising videos which show careless lorry drivers leaving a gap of just centimetres when performing overtaking manoeuvres.
But the rider says his videos are just the tip of the iceberg with many cyclists across North Wales being put in danger everyday by clueless motorists who do not pay attention to the roads or are simply just inconsiderate.
One video taken on the A525 Nant y Garth pass between Ruthin and Wrexham on June 3 shows how a lorry transporting huge logs gets perilously close to the cyclist.
It shows the HGV thunder past him leaving barely any space, despite there being more room to safely get by, reports the Daily Post.
Another heart-stopping video shows a lorry carrying haybales overtake the cyclist – leaving so little space that the rider was nearly knocked off his bike.
In his haste to get by, the HGV driver also nearly collides with an oncoming car.
The cyclist said the incident on the A494 near Ruthin in September, last year, was one of the closest he’s encountered.
He said: “The wagon carrying hay came incredibly close to hitting me – this is about as close as it gets without being knocked off.
“The driver gave me no room at all and it was pretty hairy. Not only did he narrowly avoid crashing into me, he also forced oncoming vehicles out of the way.
“It was just so dangerous.”
The rider is urging all road users to take more care before someone is seriously hurt.
He said: “It is in the highway code that you should give at least a cars width when overtaking and when someone does that I always give them a wave to say thank you.
“But I’ve lost count of the number of times people have come right up beside me and nearly caused an accident.
“I regularly have problems with farmers in tractors where their 3ft high wheels are right next to me, going 20mph, giving me no space at all.
“People just need to follow the highway code. I know that some cyclists can be a pain too, but both sides just need to have good manners on the road.”
