A bicyclist has died following a medical emergency that caused him to fall off his bike at Jamboree and San Joaquin Hills roads.

The man, 61, lived in Costa Mesa. His name was not released.

“The bicyclist passed away at the hospital,” Jennifer Manzella, a police spokeswoman, said in an email. “The coroner will do an autopsy to determine cause of death.”

Online coroner’s press reports do not include information about the victim.

The incident, first believed to be a collision involving a bicyclist, occurred at 10:32 a.m. Police issued an alert, warning motorists to avoid the area for several hours, but traffic was clear in less than 30 minutes. The man was taken to a hospital, Manzella said.

Another crash occurred this afternoon at San Miguel and Pacific View drives. A witness said it appeared that two cars were involved, with one car on its side after hitting a light pole. Crews were on scene, blocking traffic lanes, while they repaired the pole. A second car also was involved and badly damaged, the witness said.

LOS ANGELES (CNS/FOX 11) - A 43-year-old man was pulled off his bicycle in the Pico-Union area of Los Angeles and attacked by a machete-wielding man and three other suspects Sunday, but is expected to survive the injuries.

The attack was near 12th Street and Burlington Avenue at about 12:30 a.m. Four suspects got out of a green, four-door sedan and attacked the bicyclist, said Lilliana Preciado of the Media Relations Section.

During the assault, one of the suspects began hacking at the victim with a machete, Preciado said.

The victim was able run away. The suspects returned to the green sedan and drove away.

Police found the victim in the area of Burlington Avenue and 12th Street, where paramedics rushed him to an area hospital, she said.

The medical condition of the victim was released.

A man was found dead on a biking trail north of Hemet's Simpson Park early Sunday, June 21, hours after a bicyclist was reported missing from the same area.
The deceased man was identified by Riverside County coroner's officials as 33-year-old Shane Gainer of Hemet.
The cause of death has not been determined, said Riverside County sheriff's Deputy Patty Stoyer.
Hemet police would not disclose the name of the missing bicyclist they had been looking for, and late Sunday could not confirm the status of their search.
The bicyclist went to Simpson Park to ride the trails early Saturday, police said. His family became worried when he didn't return that night, and reported him missing about 11:30 p.m.
The 480-acre park at 28505 Rawlings Road, south of the city limits, features rugged hills that are popular with mountain bikers.
Searchers began scouring the area surrounding the park in an attempt to find the missing man, police said.
Gainer's body was found a mile north of the park early the next day, Stoyer said.

GARDEN GROVE – A woman in her 50s was riding along a major street Tuesday night with her dog in a tricycle basket when a driver suspected of DUI struck them, killing both, police said.

Rita Faye McLaughlin, 58 of Santa Ana was driving a small pickup around 9:45 p.m. eastbound on Chapman Avenue when she crashed into a woman riding an adult-size tricycle in the same lane near the Faye Avenue intersection, police Capt. Ben Stauffer said.

Authorities said a woman in her 50s was riding with a small dog in the basket of the tricycle and both were thrown from the vehicle because of the collision.

Garden Grove Fire Department paramedics pronounced the unidentified woman dead at the scene, while the dog was taken to an Orange County Animal Services clinic where it later died, police said.

McLaughlin stopped after the collision and was given a field sobriety test, which she failed, Stauffer said.

She was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI and will be booked into Orange County Jail.

Police closed down the street during the investigation, but reopened it around 5:20 a.m.

A bicyclist was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver Sunday evening in Rio Linda, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Kathy Ann Anthon, 67, of Rio Linda was pedaling south in a bike lane along Dry Creek Road south of G Street about 7:40 p.m. Sunday when a car struck her bicycle from behind.



The silver or gray car, possibly a Volkswagen, drove off south on Dry Creek Road. Anthon was pronounced dead at a hospital at 8:47 p.m.

Viewer Dave Ritter sent in a video to NBC4 showing a bird protecting its territory from the invading bicyclist.

Ritter sent the video to our share.nbc4i.com page, in which he’s riding a bike and the bird suddenly swoops in and attacks his helmet.

Ritter says the bird is pretty infamous in the area and it (or the family) has been there for about five years.

A cyclist died after being dragged around 500 feet down the street in a high-speed hit-in-run crash in Highland Park early Friday.
The man was struck at the intersection of Marniom Way and Figueroa Street by a black Nissan sedan traveling at more than 80 mph just before 3 a.m, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesman said.
It is unknown if the victim, who is in his mid 20s, was walking or riding the bike at the time of the crash. A witness claimed the vehicle did not apply the brakes despite the man being dragged underneath.
He just went for him, he went for the biker and kept going, and he didn't hit the brakes once.You didn't hear any screeching," a witness said.
"All you heard was the body... He was bouncing under the car... just like a basketball," the witness added.
Another person with a bike who was traveling with the man was not hit.
The vehicle, which had been traveling north on Figueroa Street, fled the scene and the driver is still outstanding.
Investigators are in the process of trying to get surveillance footage of the crash in the hope of identifying the driver's license plate

A 19-year-old bicyclist who was found fatally shot early Tuesday morning at an intersection in Commerce has been identified, authorities said.
The body was discovered about 2:50 a.m. at Eastern Avenue and Peachtree Street, according to a news release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
The man, later identified as 19-year-old Bryan Hernandez, was pronounced dead at the scene. He had been riding his bike home from work when he was shot and killed, according to an afternoon update from the Sheriff’s Department.
It was unclear how many times he had been shot.
Homicide detectives were investigating. No other information was immediately available.

Eric Anderson was riding his silver-and-white bike off the Phalen Boulevard bike path onto Cayuga Street in St. Paul when he was hit by a car Wednesday afternoon.
The 59-year-old watch commander for the St. Paul Police Department said the driver looked a bit surprised when he pulled out his badge and asked for license and registration.
Anderson was on duty but was in street clothes because he was taking advantage of the hour of physical training time officers are allotted each shift.
The driver was looking to the left for oncoming traffic when he made a right turn and struck Anderson, according to the police report. Another officer came to the scene and cited the driver for failure to yield.
"I'm 6 foot 2 and 250 pounds, wearing a bright yellow shirt and riding a silver-and-white bike ... How do you not see me?" Anderson asked with a chuckle.
Anderson had already slowed, even though he had the right of way, because he saw a different car approaching.
"You've gotta be so careful riding the bike," he said. "You can't assume people see you and have to ride with way more care than you think."
Anderson's injuries were limited to bruising on his right wrist and hip, but his bike needs about $230 in repairs, he said. He was wearing a helmet.
He is grateful the crash wasn't worse. He said he's seen a lot of bad bike accidents in his 35 years on the force.
"It's the time of year everybody has bikes out, and we just had that tragic accident with the skateboarder a month ago. You just have to pay attention -- both drivers and people on bikes and skateboards," he said, recalling the 35-year-old man killed June 2 when he hit a truck broadside while skating out of an alley onto Fairview Avenue.
"For bicyclists, I would reinforce that you have to be more careful and very observant," he said. "If something happens -- even if it's not your fault -- you're going to have the bad end of the deal because you don't have the protection of a car."
And for people behind the wheel of a car? "If you're making a right turn and you're looking to the left, check your right again to make sure nothing's there you didn't see before," Anderson said.
About 90 minutes after Anderson's bike was hit, a car hit a bicycle at the same intersection. The cyclist was taken to Regions Hospital with a scrape on his right knee and hip, according to police spokesman Sgt. Paul Paulos. :shock:

A young boy riding his bicycle was struck by a vehicle two weeks ago in Reseda, and on Tuesday night, the driver accused of leaving the scene spoke to CBS2.
The 12-year-old child identified as Amir Tabibian has a new bike but says he doesn’t know when he’ll use it.
“I’m scared to ride it,” said Amir, who was struck on Reseda Boulevard and Bessemer Street.
Never-before-seen security video shows Amir on his bike when he was struck by a car. He flew onto the hood and then onto the concrete. His bike was stuck underneath the car.
His friend and bystanders were seen in the footage coming to help, but the driver never got out of the vehicle. Amir managed the get up, at which point the driver took off, according to the footage.
“She didn’t say something like, ‘Are you OK?’ And she just going,” Amir said.
Amir’s father says he doesn’t understand why the driver didn’t stop but admits Amir was lucky as he was left with only scrapes and bruises.
“I say, ‘Thanks, God.’ Every time, I thought, ‘Thanks, God,’ ” Amir’s father said.
The family is working with an attorney to recover medical costs.
“She had a duty to stop and take responsibility for her actions,” said Amy Vahdat, an attorney.
CBS2 ran the car’s license plate and was able to find the person, who admits to being the driver, according to CBS2/KCAL9 reporter Andrea Fujii.
Andrea Fujii: “Are you going to turn yourself in because that little boy was hurt?”
Woman: “No, he told me he was OK.”
Andrea Fujii: “Well, it’s still a hit-and-run.”
The woman continued to speak with Fujii off camera and said since Amir walked away, she thought everything was OK.
Police, meanwhile, said they’ve given the car’s owner two weeks to respond to their investigation.
Amir says he has nightmares and hopes that one day he’ll be able to get back on a bike.

A 14-year-old girl riding a bicycle was struck and killed by a Santa Ana Unified School District truck in a crosswalk on Monday.
Authorities say the accident happened at Edinger Avenue and Center Street just before 8 a.m. The girl was declared dead at the scene.
The truck driver was not injured and was cooperating with police. No further information was immediately released.

RIVERSIDE (CBSLA.com) — An angry cyclist accused a California Highway Patrol officer of driving dangerously close to him in an exchange of words that was caught on video.
Cyclist Ken Adams says the incident occurred while he was riding on Glendora Mountain Road over the weekend.
“On the second occasion, the officer passed us much more closely. I would estimate probably within, certainly within a foot and a half, probably closer to a foot,” he said.
When Adams saw the officer again, his friend taped their interaction.
“You passed us with like a foot to spare,” Adams is heard saying on the clip. “You like endangered our lives for no reason.”
The officer is then heard responding: “The law requires you to be at the right-edge of the roadway.”
“I was on the white line,” Adams replied.
“Listen to me. The law also requires me to maintain the right path for the roadway,” the officer said.
But Adams said the road was empty and the officer could have easily given him more space.
California law requires drivers to be at least 3 feet away from bicyclists. If that’s not possible, drivers must slow down.
The CHP released the following statement that reads in part:
“Safety is our top priority and, particularly with the “3′ law”, there is still some confusion on how it applies in various circumstances. We’ll keep working to ensure everyone knows their options so that we can all use the road together in a safe manner.”
The officer told Adams he was only driving 25 mph, but Adams says that’s still too dangerous.
Adams says he’s filed a complaint and just wants to ensure the road is safe for everyone.
“A few seconds of impatience can change a cyclist’s life, their family’s life, and your life forever,” Adams said.

GARDEN GROVE – A 58-year-old man riding a bicycle died Tuesday morning after being struck by a car in Garden Grove.
The collision happened shortly before 9 a.m. at the intersection of Euclid Street and Century Boulevard, Garden Grove police Lt. Bob Bogue said.
The name of the man, who is from Victorville, was not released pending notification of next of kin.
The man was apparently riding his bike through a red light east to west across Euclid Street, Bogue said. He was struck by a 22-year-old woman driving a silver 2013 Nissan Versa traveling south on Euclid, Bogue said.
The man hit the left front fender of the car and the windshield. He was transported to UCI Medical Center where he died.
The driver of the Nissan stopped following the collision and remained at the scene, Bogue said. She is not facing any charges

Dozens of family, friends and supporters came to pay their respects to Mustafa Rafi, the Afghan refugee killed by a distracted driver while riding his bike near his Northern Sacramento home.

Prayers and funeral hymns rang out from an Imam at the Sacramento Muslim Cemetery with one final opportunity for the Afghan community to say goodbye to Rafi, a father, husband and friend to many in attendance.

“We have seen the whole Afghan communities who give them the help, give them all kind of help if they need it,” Samiullah Ibrahimi said.

Many, like Ibrahimi, who came to support the Rafi family didn’t know Mustafa personally, but say they were drawn to his story.

“It’s a part of our religion that we have to come together and support the dead’s family,” said one funeral goer who only went by Ahmadzai.

The day began with a funeral service at the Sacramento Islamic Center, filled with prayers and condolences. At one point Mulalai, Mustafa’s widow, became physically ill and fainted, according to those in attendance. Her cries were audible from outside the Islamic Center.

“I told Malalai that we are with you, the community is with you and the whole California are with you,” said Sacramento Afghan Community President Abdul Karim Yusufzai.

He said the family first wanted to send Mustafa’s body back to Afghanistan, but Islamic tradition dictates he be buried as quickly as possible. In order to ship his body, Mustafa’s organs would have had to be removed, which according to Yusufzai, is not the norm in Islamic tradition.

The Rafi family huddled together, surrounded by friends in a corner of the cemetery as Mustafa was buried.

“The family is in a bad situation, in misery. The public should know that this family is alone right now,” Yusufzai said.

Yusufzai says he’s proud of the way his community has stepped up to help the Rafi family and says he hopes for continued public support.

“To help each other is the best thing to do, and we can survive,” he said.

The Rafi family’s wounds may never heal, marred by tragedy. But Tuesday, in the face of sorrow, the family was surrounded prayer and kindness from friends and strangers alike.

Texas teen mows down bicyclist, refuses to stop with victim still trapped in windshield in fatal hit-and-run: cops

Silverio Alaniz, 19, drove for another mile with his victim still trapped in the shattered windshield of a 1996 Honda Accord before pulling over and dumping his victim in an alley, KDFW reported.

He would not stop.

A deranged hit-and-run driver was arrested in Texas Wednesday after he was spotted speeding down the road with his victim still embedded in the car's windshield.

Silverio Alaniz, 19, was charged with causing an accident involving death after witnesses called 911 to report the gruesome scene, the Dallas Morning News reported.

Alaniz allegedly struck 54-year-old Jimmie Sines, who was riding his bicycle at the intersection of Lake June and Holcomb roads in southeast Dallas around 6:45 p.m., police said.

Alaniz drove for another mile with Sines still trapped in the shattered windshield of a 1996 Honda Accord before pulling over and dumping his victim in an alley, KDFW reported.

Sines' badly twisted bike was left in the roadway.

Sines was pronounced dead at Baylor University Medical Center.

The car was abandoned a short distance later. Police tracked down Alaniz to a family member's house, who told them he'd been in an accident.

Alaniz is being held at Dallas County jail on $25,000 bail.
