Howdy,

My partner and I had our bikes stolen on Monday night but I think I was a bit naive to leave them hooked up to the car with only a bike lock on.

Anyway I had been looking at e-bike kits that were meant to be going on our bikes but since there gone the misses has said that I've got $10k to build 2 electric bikes.

Now I'm pretty new to bikes and i think it would be tough for me to put them both together myself. Not really sure how to proceed but wanted to see what others would do with the budget.

So $10k, two bikes, one more powerful than the other as the partner doesn't want to go more than 40(maybe 50)kph

Give us a description of the stolen bikes and where you are and there might be some people who are near you and can look around for your bikes. Also go back to the place where your bikes were stolen. Walk around, look, and talk to people. Children can be the best source of information. They usually spend a lot of time outside.

At that kind of budget I can have whatever you want custom made down here and include some exotic materials. Copy the geometry and dimensions of something you know you like so we can make a custom fit, as well as give you the ability to make some early input into the design.

Unless your real goal is to learn and get the satisfaction of building your own vehicles, then having custom ebikes built for you will have superior results than blowing most of the budget on a pair of bicycles and hang an electric system off of them. The bulk of the money gets spent on materials and drive system instead, and what makes it work is that your budget is high enough to be interesting and skilled labor is cheap here.

If I can add a bit of context to this, remember this is $10k Pacific Peso (AUD), not $10k USD. Or to think of it another way, our minimum wage is about 3 x the US's, and everything cost 3x more.

If the lesser bike has to go 40-50km/h safely, you're probably looking at front suspension and disc brake minimum. Buying those bikes brand new would set you back at least a grand if you're happy with a minor brand like Cell, or nearly 2 grand for a better one like Giant or Specialized, so there's no way the cheaper one would be $1500.

A $3k/$7k split would be much more realistic.
