BMC hub - 30-second error fixed in 3 weeks

You shouldn't have told me that. That would have prevented all this crap from happening. Now how, many FETs do I need to order.

Sorry! Sorry! Sorry! snowranger. I did the same thing on my Bafang and spent hours getting the gears off. Then I discovered you can use a pin punch to remove the gear studs from the carrier. Life goes on. Good luck with the repairs.

Doc,

Cycle9 says that the assembly does contain a stronger clutch than before, so changing out the whole thing isn't for naught.

Ah Ha! snowranger. The carrier includes the clutch! That makes a bit more sense, cause usually the gears are availible separately.

Still down. I got the new e-crazyman controller in, but it looks like my throttle is bad too. Getting too old to do this hilly commute with kids on a regular bike.

After fixing this bike, I might need to construct a spare.

Okay. I'm finally back on the road. Got a new keywin controller and throttle and rewired the hub. Also added a housing for the DC converters. Thanks for everyone's help.

The new gears are definitely noisier than the old, but as long as they don't break I don't care.

Ut oh!
I’ve got a 600W BMC Front hub with about 2,300 miles on it, and on my commute this morning I started hearing a chunk, chunk chunk as my front hub went around. It went away after I got up to speed and the hub would kick into gear. Pulling away from a stop light, this pattern started up again, so pulled over to do a little investigation. Everything on the outside looked solid and plugged in.
I continued on my commute, and this noise occurred a couple of more times, but then it got worse. I would hit the throttle and I could hear the hub make the normal whine, but the hub wouldn’t engage and spin.
Does this sound like the gears are worn out or maybe a clutch problem?
How’s the best way to get up and rolling again?
Snowranger’s gear replacement sounded way more ambitious than I think I’m prepared for. Is it really that hard? I really don’t want to screw this thing up, so if anybody has a good recommendation on where I could get this thing serviced that would be super helpful.

It could be either, but I'd bet it's the clutch that took a dump. Either way it doesn't matter because you have to buy them together as a unit. Ask the people that you bought it from for a new planetary gear and clutch assembly. They are easy to take apart if you buy one of Harbor Freight's cheap 8" gear pullers. I think I paid $20 for a set of four different sized ones. The hardest part was getting the side cover off. And even that isn't too hard if you have a hammer drill.

So far I haven't heard of anybody melting the newer green gears. If the clutch on mine goes out again I think I'll just weld the clutch up and do without the freewheel.

...thanks nicobie, for talking me off the ledge. I guess its time to start gather tools and parts!

here is detail video on how to open the BMC or Ezee motor and change gear.

BMC v2-t or v2-s or v3 use PA6 composite nylon gear, we were able to source something strong with PA66 composite nylon gear, OR one steel gear.

here are some detail about PA6 and PA66 nylon property.

Cycle9, do you have the Green V2 composite gears available?

Do you happen to know if they will fit a MAC Shanghai?

(54T, 56mm OD, PCD = 53.5mm approx, root of tooth dia = 51mm).

Great video!

Is there a link for that puller?
thank you! We try our best to publish video that are useful.

The proper name is call 3 jaw gear puller or pulley, you can find it in auto tools supplies, here is one link you can find it.

...and just like that I have a broken useless hub

This is why I should've let somebody else help me out with this. Pretty freaking expensive mistake. FFFFFUUUUUUUDDDDGGGGEEEE! Holy $hit, I just realized I think I pulled the wrong side.

I may be able to help you out. I also had the same problem, and I waited almost 9 months for BMC to send me replacement parts, and then i got an old case design that doesn't fit. So I sourced the parts elsewhere.

I just need a bit time more to test fitting of substitution casing for BMC motor, and will let you know, email me.
Which motor do you have?
