A discarded Bosch motor sparked my desire to tinker. Bosch uses a magnet at the tip of the motor shaft and a sine/cosine encoder to detect the rotor position. This sine/cosine data is useless for standard BLDC controllers, which typically support Hall sensors on the motor.
So I mounted an inexpensive MT6710 encoder board (€1.50) over the magnet and configured it for UVW mode (Hall sensor pattern output) and 7 pole pairs.
Of course, you could also run the motor sensorlessly, but sensorless FOC control with under-load startup is rare…
I know no one will go to the trouble of getting such an old bike running again, but I was just curious to see if it would work. 🧐
