Brushless hub motors, geared vs. direct drive

I've been looking into this for a while now. I have many Lipo battery packs so I can mix and match packs up to 14S and 10,000 mah. I think I want the simplicity of a hub motor to start out with. Looking at powering my bike for the 3.5 mile ride to work and back.

I think I'd like around 1000 watts to start with. I also want a brushless rear wheel motor. Looking at many ads there are geared hubs and direct drive hubs. What are the pluses and minuses of each?

Please provide links to the motor you speak of, Thanks!

Generally speaking from my pov, DD wins in price, power, reliability/maintanence and geared hubs win in weight, bike efficiency, and lowest torque.

I'd usually recommend a 'starter' 36-48 kit that currently floods ebay/amazon for basic 'standard' use/commute. Prices and fit/finish have never been better. !00w is basically nothing though, you might want to just try and might actually be happy holding a cordless drill w/chucked roller to the tire in a friction drive fashion. Thinking again, perhaps you meant the much more common 1000w, which I find more than capable in DD for normal 'comute' riding at ~25mph and standard terrain.

Oh my bad! I did mean 1000W watt.

25-30MPH would be a good range for me. Any links?

For 30 mph, you would want the faster wind direct drive motor. I can't recommend the cheap kit because of the sometimes shoddy wheel build, but nothing wrong with the motors themselves.

Geared motors better for other uses than 30 mph. for tops speeds closer to 25 mph, the 500w rated 10t wind geared motors shine. They freewheel for those who want to pedal more when it's flat or nearly so. they have great torque, so they do better, more perky while still very efficient in stop and go city riding conditions.

But your ride is very short. Why not just blast it at 30 mph? Whee!

I can't put links to the company I work for. but it's easy to find.

The DD's I was referring to are all basically the same motor/controller with different accessory variations to fit buyer preference. About 28mph on a 14s battery. Just buy from a popular seller with good reviews/service. The one I have is like 150-170 on ebay now and I have no complaints!! Yescom or 1kw hub are tags you could use to search recent threads here on similar too. On ebay just search 1000w hub.
