Build a DC Generator?

Hey guys,

Since there is a wealth of intelligent creative people on here, I was hoping to get some of your thoughts and speculation on the best approach to getting/constructing a lightweight DC generator.

Rough estimate of my power needs: 1-5 kw.

Any ideas welcome! I am fumbling in the dark with this.
