If the battery is very low, then yes just hook up the charger to it to bump it up to a safe voltage for lets say a few seconds and measure the settled rise in voltage, repeat until safe voltage is reached, like for 18650's would be 2.8V or 3V. Then charge it very slowly, if you can 0.1A charge.
Safer that way, but also less stress on the battery cell, your case a coin cell like watch battery or whatever? Guess I could google L-ion Sony FV 50

Hopefully its not to low, guessing if 3.4V is half, then 2.5Vx2=5V if its 5V would means its very very low? I dont know. But if it is, just bump it up with quick pulses of charge, wait till settled higher voltage and repeat.
