Anyone have a foldable Dahon Road bike? How can it be converted and does folding get in the way of the battery and controller?

My friend runs a Bionx kit on his 26" wheel Dahon folder.
His battery pack is mounted on the rear rack.
The bike also has a porteur style front rack so he doesn't often fold it.

I regularly see a guy on a 20" Dahon folder running a Bionx kit with its distinctive battery box on the slanted top-tube.

There are lots of Dahon folders in all configurations buzzing around. Just use the search function.

i have a cheap folder from ebay that i have converted with an X5 so anything is possible. it was hard work getting the rear disc brake on i had to mucho strech the dropouts. but its well worth being able to take the X5 on the train. amazing joined up transport solution. i now do 80 miles a day commuting with the train + X5.

Hey Monster,

I'm new to bike lingo,

What is a folder and X5? Can you post some links and a picture of your setup?

Thanks

Zoot Katz, how much that Bionx kit cost?

Instead of a foldedr, would this rack work?

folder = foldable bike
x5 is a series of motors made by Crystayte. They have the 5303 / 5304 / 5305 / 5306 that are abbreviated to just x5 as a generic term used for the motors. The difference between the different numbers, is the lower the number, the faster you will go with the same voltage, but you will have less torque than a higher wound motor.

Shyy, if you are looking for a folding bike, have you seen this?

It's 26 " tire folding bike. Kind of hard to find 26" folding so I thought I'd mention it. I don't know if they are any good or not so you might ask around to someone who knows.

Hmm I do, hence my nickname on this forum. It's on a Dahon MuSL and the person Zoot Katz mentioned riding it is probably me. I see him occasionally with his X5 on the regular bike route. It's one of those battery mount mounted on a slanted top tube and I bought the whole setup from JVBIKE.COM. Check out their website for more electric folder info.

Can it fold with all the wirings intact? The answer is YES! Easier to do with a battery box removed by simply sliding it out, but yes you can fold it with the battery and everything -- the controller is in the hub. That was the reason I bought it. It must be versatile enough for me to load it into the car without grabbing the rack, so it's useful by hopping on the ferry over to the islands or by extending my commute by riding into downtown while parking the car somewhere where I don't have to pay parking fees! I do have an ArcLite rack installed and that's good for smaller pannier like the Ortlieb front loaders. The heavier duty high rack you inquired above is for carrying full on panniers. Unless you plan to tour long distance with it, I suggest smaller panniers for good ride stability.

Hope this helps!

DE.
