Can I modify MSB axles like this?

I have somewhat old MBS hub/axle set I'm using in a e-board project. The board is somewhat large, and I have extended the axles with a makeshift technique. However, is it possible to detach the 12mm diam. axle rods and replace them with similar but a little longer ones? this would be extremely handy, and judging by some set screws in the mounts, they should be seaprable. So far I haven't got them to move at all, but then again, I haven't used that much force..

Have any of you tried this out maybe, or know it impossible?

It can definitely be done. I tried something similar on my 2nd build but I made the mistake of not using steel that was "hardened" or "Tempered". They looked great but bent right away, $200 for the machinist down the drain.... As long as you use hardened steel like the originals it will work.
