There is a bike that is being sold on craigslist that I am interested in converting to a BBS02. It has a 38T chainring. Can I just use the stock that comes with the bike? Just ignoring the chainring that comes with the kit? I don't want to deal with chain length adjustments if I increase the teeth etc. How will the BBS02 perform with a 52V battery and a 38T chainring? I will be happy as long as I get 20mph for about 20miles on flat roads. I don't care more than that.

Probably not. The way that the BBSxx motors offset with the crank, you would need a new spider and hope that it matches the BCD of your donor bike's chainring (which it likely won't). You're much better and easier off to use the stock 42T chainring from the BBS02. It's only 4 teeth longer, which is 2 inches of chain. Your derailleur might let you get away with it that difference without a change, but adding some chain should be quite trivial compared to messing with the chainring.

I can add 4 links of chain in under 5 minutes. Or better yet, just get a new chain and size it to what you need. You will need to buy a chain breaker tool, but they are cheap and not having one while owning a BBSxx motor is not advisable in my book.

Go full James Bond and get a dope ass golden chain for goldfinger :D

Golden chain sounds like fun. Thanks for the info. I have all the basic bike tools. Just that I am a bit lazy :)
