Looking for something i could cart my 2 year old kid around in but the riese and muller bike is about £3800 gbp larry versus Harry sell there frame for about €1000 euros so might be temped by one of them, or even a bakfiets, anybody any experience with this style of cargo bike?

The generic bakfiets trike from China is Crmo so flexes but takes up vibrations well. You can find them on ebay.

Danish Christiania trikes are triple the price and aluminium. I'd rather the extra weight and go electric. Here is mine:

I take my kids everywhere when I can. It has a plastic rain cover.
My 6 month old son's car capsule fits in the front - just unbolt the seat board. And the two kids sit on the rear board.

I fitted an older Ezee and a 10s bottle battery with a 9 FET at 25amps from greenbikekit. Thumbthrottle to suit the bars.


It came with a seven speed internal shimano rear hub. I took that off and fitted a 7 speed sprocket to the rear, with all the torque of a geared hub I just chose one speed to suit about a 22kph rolling speed and I don't need to change gears. The hub gets it rolling and I pedal once going. I shortened the chain and didnt need an idler as the rear dropouts have plenty of horizontal adjustement.

I ride on the footpath and get lots of nice comments from pedestrians because of the speed and the size, something about seeing the kids playing inside makes them all happy and I don't get any aggro from pedestrians...

I paid about 12oo for the chinese bike from a local importer. They seem to be everywhere. Adding the ezee and bottle battery took it up to maybe 1700 bucks australian.

I got Gloworm in Sydney to build the rear wheel. You're gonna fill it with weight so I opted not to just get a BPM from china already laced. The BPM would handle almost the same torque, but chinese wheelbuilders aren't for this kind of application IMHO.

The same bike is on ebay and aliexpress websites delivered direct from China.

I built my own using the instructions at http://tomscargobikes.com . If you can do basic welding (or know someone who can), it's not all that hard or expensive (except for the batteries, of course . My two-year-old loves it and gets lots of jealous looks from other kids at the park. :lol:

I'm thinking on similar lines. Major motivation for the bike is the ability to ride with my daughter on the back. Now that she is four she has just about outgrown the traditional "baby seat". The only options seem to be; upgrading to a bigger child seat like these http://www.bobikeusa.com/Bobike-Junior-BB-JR.htm or invest in something a bit bigger with more carrying capacity like a cargo bike. This would be a lot more spendy and I would need to be convinced that it would still fit a standard size car rack for when we had to travel long distance. Also would the longer wheel base still be able to negotiate those stupid gates along the canal - I live in the same area as Batfink so he will know what I mean!

Thanks for the advice guys, great tips from you all. I'm kinda thinking i will bite the bullitt so to speak it looks like a great bike, we have alot of nice cycle paths here in Edinburgh that lead me to children's play parks with my kid and stuff but the canal paths we have are amazing, I hate these little turnstiles they have all the way along the canal, they are every so often and I'm not sure why they are there, maybe to stop kids zooming down in motorbikes but I'm honestly in a mind to stihl saw them down. I have did the commute from Edinburgh to falkirk alot, charge at falkirk and back again many times and its a kinda dream of mine to finish my full suspension build by the end of summer and I will be able to do this regularly with reliability.

I bought a wee ride child's bicycle seat the other day and its a cool, seat that sits on the top tube in between you and the handlebars and feels really good but my kid was tired already the other day when I was trying her out in it and she was moaning so i didn't get to try her out, every time ive seen those cargo style bikes with kids in them they seem to love it, so I'd love to be able to pop my 2 year old in and zoom off to the shops and stuff, no fighting flash businessmen in bmw's who have stolen all the "family spaces" in the car park, I could just whizz up to the front door and straight into the shops

My only concern with the larry versus Harry bike or any cargo bike is the lack of any kind of suspension, (i would mostly carry my kid and groceries, no huge heavy loads) I wouldn't want the kid to take all the bumps, maybe fit a front mono shock or big apple tires but not sure what sort of tire would do the front small wheel and I'm also not sure about the clearance on the frame for balloon tyres

Also pithy, my welding skills aren't up to scratch, and I really want a bike on the road asap, my other bike is still unfinished but will be finished in around 4 weeks

This is the seat i got the other day http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2137850/Review-WeeRide-Safe-Front-Deluxe.html It wouldn't be hard to take another similar style but bigger seat and make your own mounts for it to sit in the middle of the bike, would be much better handling,

I'd suggest a larger frame and for more clearance some sort of swept around handlebars for clearance for your kid
