Charge 5s in 6/7/8s port?

I got the Turnigy Accucell 8150 and would like to be able to balance charge my two 5s and one 3s packs all at once. Can I just stick one of the 5s balance leads into a larger port? Or will it not charge?

I also noticed that this charger has an output for a basic lead. How will that work, how will it know what voltage to charge to? I assume this is for bulk charging or otherwise non-balance charging.

I'm not familiar with this charger, so let me give you my best guess based on how most lipo chargers work.

If you want to charge 8S, you need to hook the 3s + 5s pack into serial, and make a balance connector harness that converts the 5s + 3s into an 8s plug.

OR.. if it uses two 4S ports to charge an 8s pack, you need to make a harness for that.

Hobbyking sells balance lead extenders that you can hack up to make something like that. Guys who are using 14S hyperions are no stranger to doing this since that charger uses two 7S ports ( how strange! )

You could do that, however my guess is that you will be putting a higher voltage into your charger than it expects, causing some unpleasant snap crackle pop action.

If you do plug it in, and get no sparks, it very well may not detect the other cells correctly and think you only plugged in a 5S pack.

I think the likelyhood of snap crackle pop is about 50%.

On the accucel all balance connectors are paralleled, presumably from the lowest cell up (haven't checked).

Be careful or you will cook your charger.
You should only have one balance connector used at a time.

can you draw a diagram of what you are trying to do?

I charge a 5s in series with a 2s in the 7s port. The batteries are hard wired in series and I cut the correct end off the 2S packs connector so they fit the 7s port together.You have to remove one pin doing this as the top of one battery is the bottom of the other.

The 8150 charges the battery through the charge leads only. The balance leads do not supply power.

Once again I am getting turned off by lipo. THis is getting insanely complicated. Why did I think lipo was a viable option for ebiking? I know a lot of you guys use it, so I guess I'm just lazy and only want to plug in one wire to charge.

I might be posting all my lipo stuff for sale again, all of it is brand new, all Turnigy.

I have the same accucell 8150 charger, and bought a 8series zippy compact from HK along with it. Ofcourse it doesnt work out of the box, as the 8cell pack has 2x4series connectors. As I understand it I have to cut the black off of one of the plugs, and plug it in to the left of the unaltered one eh?

Whoa padner! Don't sell off stuff at a loss just yet. It won't be hard or complicated once you build a harness.

Get a jst extension that is 8s, then splice in 5s and a 3s connector into it. They will share one balance wire so that wire will need a y in it. Not really complicated at all for a smart guy like you. Then plug into the charger on the 8s plug, and charge away with the main wires connected in series for 8s.
