I've got a 36v2a sla charger that I use for opportunity charging on the road.Well over the years it's been banged about some and about a week ago it stopped working.I noticed that the wire going from the charger to the batts was worn out from constant use at where it enters the charger (bent back and forth one too many times). The charger box was glued together so I used a dremel tool to cut open the case.I cut out the damaged wire and soldered in a new one then Duct taped the case together again. It now works ....sort of!

The problem now is when charging It'll stop in the middle of the charge at ~ 39v and go from red to green and it just hangs there. If I disconnect the batteries and unplug from the wall and then reconnect it all and start again it will proceed until the charge is finished to 43.6v then go to float until the current drops to zero.

Any Ideas on how to remedy this would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance
Eric

Wow your opportunity charger really lasted well! I went through two in a week. They weren't made to ride around with and stuff inside folded over and shorted out. Now I just keep one stashed at work.

Well it looks as though I found out why this charger was hanging...I think...(going frome red light to green too soon)

Heat ! I took off most of the duct tape I had used to put the charger box back together and so far so good it charges up to the 43.6v without any interuption and then goes to float.

I guess the duct tape was adding a layer of insulation to keep the heat in the box and tripping some sort of heat sensor in there.

Yipee... :D
