Communication Error Hell

hi.
i have a Vilano Atom Ebike. After a rainy day, I started getting error 30 on the King Meter display. Through process of elimination I thought the controller to be the issue, in the meantime I ordered a throttle (it hadnt had one), and a bundle controller and display, Brainpower S866. It finally came , I pieced it together, nothing, no command to the motor at all, than after a bit, I get a ((!)) error, which is a communication error, same as error 30. The only thing that I can think of it to be now is the motor itself or the hall, but I had tested this on a friends scooter. It did run, but he said the the movements were kind of jerky, like it didn't know which way to go. It is a direct drive motor.

I saw somewhere that you can reprogram the controller to be sensorless? Is this true? I'm no good with a volt meter, yet.
Also, P07 is the only setting I didn't know the answer, speed magnets or total magnets in the motor? and how do I find out how many magnets are in my motor? Hopefully, Maybe a correct programming will get rid of the communication error? Also, on the new controller there is an additional 3 wire connection. the white, black and grey one. It this a necessity?

Either I am missing something completely, Or I am doing something wrong. And I'll take any help I can get.

Thanks so much!!!

Update: I programmed P07 to 80, and P20 to 2: now the communication error is gone. But I have error 8, turn fault?

P.P.S. I set P20 to 0. No errors reading, but still nothing.

Is the diagram above of the new controller correct for the throttle, I read somewhere it may be the speed sensor. But still, PAS isn't working either.

Please excuse the mess.....

Hi kiradieskira,
My thoughts...

Any time is see the possibility of water intrusion, you want to make sure EVERYTHING is opened up an dried out. That also goes for the motor, even perhaps by removing some screws or cracking open a case and putting under a heat lamp to evaporate any trapped moisture.

In the manual I looked at, this indication on the display means that the brakes are actuated. (or a brake reminder)

Yep, it's time to get your meter skills up and running.

After making sure your hub motor is dried out, try some check out procedures mentioned in this thread (paying closer attention to the hall sensor troubleshooting as a jerky motor would be an indication of hall sensor problems...)

Some do it automatically. What is the controller make and model? Make and model of your motor? Have you tried your learning wire yet?

Other wise I would next check to see if you have 5vdc regulated power coming from your controller at your motor's hall sensors
red and black wires.(or throttle, or PAS)

Regards,
T.C.

Thanks T.C.!
My friend is bringing over a volt meter tonight and i will do me some learning. :D is there some kind of chart that I could find that would tell me what all the wires are supposed to read? I want to go through the whole thing, starting with the halls
I had opened the hub before but this time I will get some moving air in there.

Thanks Again!

I have not tried the learning wire. I'm not quite sure how it works. Did my connections look ok? If my controller is a dual one, how do I switch it over?

When I turned on the bike the last time I got a motor failure error code. Hopefully it is just a hall.

Thanks again!

Lots of information on this forum, if you have something specific just ask. Include function and wire colors. As far as your BLDC motor and hall sensors check out, you will find some good tips here...

Verify correct operations and readings first before using the learning wires.

Are the wiring explanations in the "new controller" picture above the same as your 866C-6 model?

If you have a dual one it will sense a failure (or not even connection) in the hall sensor system and automatically use it's sensorless mode. This thread discusses this as well as using the learning wire...
http://www.etotheipiplusone.net/?p=2373
as well as other threads here on ES.

Use the minimal connections necessary during learning and troubleshooting. IE: leave PAS and brake switches disconnected, as well as any add-on equipment.

Without the wires being labeled as to where they are going to and coming from, separated, and organized. I find it impossible to give any sure and accurate suggestions. :(

Update:

It seems it was the programming of the new display. I finally got response from my motor!!!! So pumped! I'm reading no errors. :D But my PAS doesn't seem to be communicating with the motor correctly. It will cut on at first, but not stay on while pedaling. I checked the disc, it seems ok, sensor light flashing accordingly. And the new throttle is not working at all.
Next I will check the combos of the motor cable wires...

Yes, the new Controller is the 866c-6. I had done my best to label each photo with what the connections were for. Its real small at the bottom of them. if I am incorrect, let me know and I will post them again.

Thanks!
