Hello everybody,
I live in Europe, and I was recently looking for an e-bike. They are quite hard to find these days, and most models are quite expensive (at least 4000 EUR) and seem to have small batteries. Since it looks it's a bit easier to find a non-electrical bike, I was thinking about converting my 2015 Cannondale Caadx and then buying another non-electric gravel or road bike for when I want to have a muscle-only ride (the non-electric versions seem a bit easier to find - e.g. Canyon Grizl, Grail or Endurace).
Some details:
The bike is a Cannondale CaadX 2015 with Shimano Tiagra 10 speed group and hydraulic disk brakes. It can use tyres up to 40mm/1.6".
I'm rather tall (195cm / 6' 5") and heavy (105kg / 231lbs). This makes it even harder to find a prebuilt ebike.
I would use the bike both for commuting and for some leisure riding, on roads only (I have my MTB for offroad, the terrain is quite harsh and it's not really suited to a gravel bike).
I live in a zone which has some steep hills that I need to climb (10% average slope is common, and a couple of roads I frequently take reach 20%/22% in some points), and there are a number of ups-and-downs (it's not a place where you climb, then it's just flat). Typical elevation gain over my standard 40km / 25 miles trip is 500m / 0.31 miles
I need at least 50km / 31 miles mileage without a charge, and I'd really love to reach 60km/70km (~40 miles) without a charge.
I was thinking about a Bafang BBS02 mid-drive engine. I've seen some rear hub engines, but that would prevent me from using my rear gears. My bottom bracket size should be OK (68mm) for the Bafang. What I'm not sure is:
* Considering that I'll need to use the 250W controller, which battery should I pick to reach the mileage I need? And, are batteries in kits sold on aliexpress (or bafang-e) good enough, or should I pick a different one? Is it better to pick an higher-voltage battery and run it with lower amperage, or vice-versa?
* Any other suggestion (different drive motor, some specific battery, additional sensors, "look there for a prebuilt large bike instead", anything else)? - Ideally I would like to stay within 1000 eur (1150 USD), which seems doable.
* Recommendations about where should I source my kit for european delivery?
Thanks!
